Sharwil avocado trees San Diego
« on: October 04, 2019, 03:47:22 PM »
Was at walter andersens in Poway today and they had about 50 nice looking sharwil avocado trees from la verne nursery.   Would have got one if I didnt already have this one.  Didnt check the price maybe 40 if they are charging the same as other la verne trees.  They will probably sell quick.

I'm going to drop some paperwork there tomorrow and can look for mango trees.

Andersens does charge more than the farm suppliers but its closer.  And the la verne trees are a bit nicer and dont come with persea mites.

Theres a lowes on the way and a home depot near andersens, they may have also got some and would be cheaper.  It looked like they dropped off a whole truck full of sharwil trees.

Nice I would like few la verne seedlings if they have them. I may stop at the two locations in poway n my way back today.

I did not see any Mango trees at Walter Anderson Nursery in Poway. The Sharwil trees looked nice and healthy.

Yeah no mango trees.  Sharwils were 50$ !!

La verne must be really proud of them.  They did look nice.  For what its worth, sharwil seems to be an easy one to graft and pretty vigorous.  You can make your own sharwils fairly easy.

Thanks both Brad and Simon, I did stop there myself couple of nights ago. Where do you guys typically get your La verne / Manila from ? I am down to one rootstock, I would consider seeds as well.

thanks

We have been growing mangos from seeds.  Keitts are still in the stores, Im going to plant about 10 seeds in pots and use a few in June.  Im not really that impressed with lavern manilla trees to be honest.  I think you would be well off to just grow your own seeds.  The best would be grow seeds of good types from Florida so you could potentially get good fruit without ever grafting.  We have a lot of those growing and some kents and manillas and other seedlings that will need to be grafted in the future.  Im top working a manilla tree thats a few years old and its a total pain.

Interesting you say that, my manila is doing the same, I was having this discussion in a Facebook group. I have other seedlings such as Carrie and unknown Hawaiian I got from Steve(exotica recommended rootstock). The Hawaiian seedling is kicking butt..

One of the seedlings I picked up from Exotica was labeled "Pope".

I think Pope is a Hawaiian variety. I put it in the ground three months ago, grafted it a week or so later, and it has put on two flushes already.

Pope may be referring to the Wilson Popenoe Avocado AKA Wilson.
