On 14 December, a new EU regulation which regulating the import of live plant material came into force. According to the local authority of our country, the phyto must already be attached to a shipment of seeds from a third country even in small quantities. This complicates the situation not only at the exit from the exporting country (situation in Brasil) but especially at the entry into the EU. I wonder if other EU members have noticed the application of these new rules, or whether these rules apply equally in each EU country? I also have a question to sellers - who of you can attach phyto to a seed shipment to EU destinations?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Yerba Mate germination
« on: July 18, 2019, 04:15:28 PM »
Finally its clear that both of my female Ilex paraguariensis plants have fruits. From last year experience, when I got only 1 fruit which I lost after storm (or bird prey? dont know..) I expect that they will be ripe at the end of august. What is your advice for succesfull germination? Only very few direct reports are acessible online and they use very different methods. I dont want to waste so precious seed material... Thanks

At the end of february will stay couple of days in Borneo. Can someone advise best places not only for tasting various fruits, but places when I can see them right on the trees. I have interest also about spices and medicinals... Thanks.

Temperate Fruit Buy, Sell, & Trade / Emperors haw for sale
« on: October 30, 2018, 01:58:41 PM »
Seeds from this nice chinese species for sale worldwide. One of the most aprecciated haws with big fruits with medicinal value. Price 1 seed - 1 € + postage. Seeds are very fresh. Within EU countries also grafted plants available for sale.

Emperors haw (Crataegus pinnatifida var. Maior)
Crataegus pinnatifida is a deciduous Tree growing to 7 m (23ft) by 7 m (23ft).
It is hardy to zone 5-9 and is not frost tender. It is in flower in May, and the seeds ripen from September to October. The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by Midges.
The fruit is antibacterial, anticholesterolemic, cardiotonic, hypotensive, stomachic, vasodilator. It contains several medically active constituents including flavonoids and organic acids. It has been shown to lower blood cholesterol levels and to improve blood circulation. It is used in Korea in the treatment of abdominal distension, pain, diarrhoea and to induce menstruation. The dried fruit is alterative, antiscorbutic, deobstruent, laxative, stimulant and stomachic. The fruits and flowers of hawthorns are well-known in herbal folk medicine as a heart tonic and modern research has borne out this use. The fruits and flowers have a hypotensive effect as well as acting as a direct and mild heart tonic. They are especially indicated in the treatment of weak heart combined with high blood pressure. Prolonged use is necessary for it to be efficacious. It is normally used either as a tea or a tincture. The seed is recommended in the treatment of difficult labour, hernia and swollen genitals. The leaves and twigs are used as an antidote to varnish poisoning (from certain Rhus spp). The root is used in the treatment of nausea and vomiting.
A very easily grown plant, it prefers a well-drained moisture retentive loamy soil but is not at all fussy. Once established, it succeeds in excessively moist soils and also tolerates drought. It grows well on a chalk soil and also in heavy clay soils. A position in full sun is best when plants are being grown for their fruit, they also succeed in semi-shade though fruit yields and quality will be lower in such a position. Seedling trees take from 5 - 8 years before they start bearing fruit, though grafted trees will often flower heavily in their third year. A very ornamental plant. The sub-species C. pinnatifida major has larger fruit than the type species, it is cultivated for this fruit in China.
