Hi Alexandre,

thank you for Plinia seeds, they arrived in perfect condition very weel packed in slightly moist sphagnum. I think it is the best packaging method for jabuticabas, as I have 100 % germination rate. They not only survived long way to Europe but I can immediately plant them to soil because they have developed strong root and epicothyl. I will definitely buy from you again.

I have this and second unknown species of Clavija from Ecuador. They grow slowly, but are very atractive and suitable for greenhouse or indoor culture. Likes halfshade and lot of water. Dont know anything about fruits because my plants are only 2 or 3 ft tall and not reached the flowering size.

Guilherme is very good seller. Seeds arrived in perfect conditions, packed in sphagnum and what is important, he provide tracking number so I can easily check when I can expect to receive the seeds. I will post update when they start to germinate. Thank you. :)

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: YIKES! Fig damage - what's up?
« on: February 17, 2018, 02:23:58 PM »
When this occured in asian persimons (kaki), on main trunk, plant survived but this year they forming new branches under the lesion. It is better to cut affected branch after the last freeze so the new branches will be stronger and longer.

It is typical when after strong freeze  rise the  temperature , especially if the coverage is dark colored. Last year, when we have strong winter which is now in US, all figs were frozen to the ground, except one which is planted near south wall. A lot of hardy ,subtropicals, were damaged like the fig in your picture. Painting the trunk with white color can partially reduce this problem.

Few years ago I got fresh seeds from Brasil. Very good germination rate, nice plants, but only 1 year. Then they decline to grow for unknown reason and subsequently die. The same as the ishipingo (Ocotea quixos). From my experience very difficult to grow in pot culture or outside equatorial climate. :(

I will definitely try Decaisnea this year, it seems to be very interesting for my growing zone. Problem is only with good seed source. I try several times to germinate them (stratified, without stratification) no one of big amount germinate :( Seed were probably very old or not properly stored.
Interesting info about Akebia Karen :) Seems that many of Lardizabaceae is not only unusuall but also healthy...

Another interesting member with edible and curious fruits may be Decaisnea fargesii (blue sausage fruit). It is hardy down to -15 °C and fruit have sweet jelly pulp. It is not well known here as the Akebia is, but looks very interesting....

« on: February 02, 2018, 02:31:56 PM »
I have only Carissa macrocarpa, it fruits without problems. Some Apocynaceae may need special pollinators like moths. I dont know if it is the case of Carissa, but flowers have strong delicate scent like jasmine.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Feijoa flowering (greenhouse)
« on: February 02, 2018, 02:28:01 PM »
I think that it is more due to the longer day at spring than temperature. It is cold greenhouse, temperatures go often to -1°C at night. Feichoas are not as tropical as jaboticabas.

I have feichoas in greenhouse and they are very easy plants. Flowering period here is end of february and march, fruits rippen from september to october. From may to november I put them outside because they appreciate a lot of sun.

If I have garden in the tropics I will definitely try some unusuall spices like - Indonesian cinnamon, Chinese cinnamon, Amazonian cinnamon, African Pepper, Calabash Nutmeg, Indonesian Bay leaf. I try some of these here, but Im limited with greenhouse so difficult job but have succes with Black pepper, Allspice (very good spice), various cinnamons, vanilla, ginger, cardamon, pompon vanilla. Sichuan pepper grows very good outside but may be problematic in tropics. Also Sassafras, bay leaf, Californian bay leaf grow well here. If you want more information and history of spices I recommend these site  http://gernot-katzers-spice-pages.com/engl/index.html  ;)

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Any Rec's for Persimmons and PawPaws?
« on: October 19, 2017, 04:58:45 PM »
For me best is Nikitas Gift (X) very cold hardy not too big but sweet fruits with rum flavor. Persimons with bigger fruits here - Buyu, Kaukaz, Buffalo Heart and Chong Pjong (Korean columnar variety) - all adstrigent.
I have about 15 varietes of Pawpaws, but the best is one seedling with very sweet fruits with light seeds and firm pulp with vanilla taste. Very good fruits are from Overleese and Pensylvania Golden 1 (it has taste like caramel) 8)

I was surprised only with that Helicostylis as synonym for Brosimum . It is new thing for me. Anyway, one or another, they are very interesting trees not only for their fruits but also for pharmacological substances.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone grow black goji berry?
« on: March 22, 2017, 04:40:33 PM »
Yes I grow them. Still wait for fruiting... They are interesting. When you put the dry berry to the water, it stay blue at first then violet. Fruits are rich in antioxidants.
Yeah! They'd make a beautiful tea. I would expect it to prefer a climate similar to that of the regular goji. Don't know if they are used fresh or in cereals like red goji.

They can withstand more drouhgt than regular goji. Very easy to keep plant... I havent an opportunity to taste them so I dont know. May be this year? :)

Where did you get seeds?

Many sellers in Europe offers them. I bought them from Italy . They are long viable seeds.

And perhaps in the future, topics about pouterias, about spondias, about other families will be cool, since it came out of the sameness.

The seeds, marked as Helicostylis are seeds of some Brosimum (may be alicastrum). I have seeds of Helicostylis tomentosa and they look like the seeds marked as Naucleopsis in your picture. They are abou 4 times smaller than that of Brosimum. I will take the picture from my young plants.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Cinnamon
« on: March 04, 2017, 06:24:12 AM »

If one's ultimate goal is to harvest the bark for cinnamon,  pruning the tree to keep "small" is not beneficial.   You want the tree to grow up so you can proceed with the sacrific to get the water suckers to harvest the bark.

I must keep them small because Im limited with roof of greenhouse as I live in nontropical climate. In FL I think you can grow them without any prunning and they can easily attain 10 m hihg
