Reed Avocados in San Diego County
« on: August 18, 2014, 12:13:45 AM »
The fruit stand at the SE corner of Hwy 76 and Interstate 15 finally has Reed avocados. I've been waiting to get these for a while. Got some yesterday. Excited to taste them.

Also, in case you hadn't seen it in other posts Atkins has Reed and other top notch avocado trees.

If you can find try Nabal, the parent of Reed, & kept by the old time growers as a door yard tree. [ one that was not productive enough commercially but the the one they favored to eat]

California grown Reed's are for sale all over California right now, show me the California grown Mango's. I bought Reeds's from Vista for $2.50 each today , the lowest price I've seen this year. I can't wait for the California grown commercial Keitt harvest to come in soon.

The farmers market in Mira Mesa is selling large reeds for $2 a piece or 3 for $5.  I've heard that some people like Nabal even more than Reed. I've never tried Nabal but Reeds are hard to beat with their ultra creamy texture.

Man, am I jealous.  I have a Reed tree which hopefully will produce next year but am dying to get my hands on some now.  All mail order prices is outrageous, like $7.58 each after shipping.  Know anyone that ships Reeds at a decent price?

Tasted my first Reed this morning with a dash of salt and pepper. Excellent avocado, but couldn't really tell any difference from Hass except for shape.
