Poll for the name of Luc's Garcinia sp.
« on: April 05, 2015, 06:45:04 PM »
Wanted to gauge a forum consensus on the name of Luc's Garcinia sp. find from Mexico. Many of us have not tried the fruit yet but from what I read, it sounds like it has a lot of potential. The poll will run for 30 days, results shown after vote.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

The common ( vernacular )name in this area is "Limoncillo" which is a nice name ; also relates the resemblance with round shape and the yellow color of the lemon; I believe part of the legacy of the fruits comes within the regional name people call them; can't imagine a Achachairu;  or Bakupari being  call by other names or  a Durian call "Malasyan Jackfruit"
Lol. !! well just my two cents........... saludos!

Purely from marketing point Lucangosteen sounds too long and complex. Limoncillo sounds somewhat "lemony" and Spanish sounding. Asians may have problem with pronunciation.  Mexican Garcinia no go because ordinary people don't know what garcinia means. Lucosteen might be the best, but still gives no suggestion to people on fruit qualities. Mexican mangosteen or even American mangosteen (for marketing in countries like Taiwan) might be the best even if it's two words and long name. Word mangosteen immediately associated with high quality and for many it would give good hint.

Boy that's an understatement. The only people on the forum that have tasted it are the only 2 Mexican members: Luc and Raul. So for all we know this fruit could taste like doggie poo poo. Just kidding. ;) I'm sure it's a good one. Was verified to me by trustworthy American friend. Well, can't completely trust Mexican cartel on this one, can we? HAHA
Thanks nullzero for doing the poll. Thanks Luc for collecting and sending the seeds, and finding this long hidden Aztec treasure. Thanks Raul for finding other color variations of this fruit. Make sure to send some to me. But don't use Burro Postal system. Use EMS.  ;)
Right now i'm using the name Mexican Mangosteen on my webstie. But if someone thinks of a better name i'm open to changing that.

I like the name Limoncillo but it's already a pretty nice Spanish drink I think it's an aperitif or digestif. Also looks like a synonym used for Melicocca bijuga when I Google so it may cause confusion?

LMAO!!  ;D

Asians may have problem with pronunciation.

That would be too funny  ;D

I agree with Raul, IMO limoncillo should be the name, even it's not the best for marketing. Or are we creating the new product for Dole, Chiquita, ect?

I think if the locals call it limoncillo it should be called that, luc tacking his name on it just because he brought it to our attention doesn't seem right

Luc never asked for his name to be "tacked" onto it as far as I know. It's abit rude to just assume that!
Also in the tradition of plants it's not uncommon for the person who brings it to the attention of the wider world to have some way his name is incorporated anyway(garcinia livingstonei). Locals will call it what they call it regardless of what is decided on this forum so I doubt they would mind really.
As was mentioned above names will often change for marketing purposes anyway eg kiwi fruit

I like Langosteen, its a catchy name easy to pronounce and not to long. This naming was just a consensus of what others think and what those of us on the forum would like to call it among one another. It could reach broader audiences if those supplying the seeds here share the seeds and fruit with others using the name. Also google may add some validity to the name overtime.

I don't think Limoncillo is a good name for broader reach and uniqueness (it reminds me of a Italian lemon flavored liquor). A lot of fruits in Mexico have common names, that are interchanged with fruits. This makes it harder to distinguish between fruits, ex. sapote (used for a bunch of fruits) or pitaya (used for other catus fruits). I voted for Lucosteen, though I would change my vote to Langosteen (it sounds even better).

Come up with a few new names and I will rework the poll with the new names and reset it.

Mayaosteen

Mexosteen

I believe Maya culture was in southern Mexico and Central America. No Mayas in Acapulco where Luc found these wild plants. I believe that was Aztec area. So Aztecosteen?  ;) Probably for marketing purposes they would change it to something like Aztec Gold.
