Sweetest florida dragon fruit top 3 please
« on: January 26, 2019, 08:05:40 PM »
I admit I am being lazy here by not reading the entire dragon fruit thread ...... here is what I know ...... although beautiful the store bought white fleshed varieties are to bland for me.

The store bought full size yellow variety is very sweet and I liked it a lot

Here's what I think I know ....... Yellow is hard to grow and the fruit is very small ...... is that true or is there a go to yellow that is doing well in Florida?

If the yellow is a no go ....... what are the 3 sweetest varieties that I can plant instead and are they really sweet or are the blandish also

Thanks for your help

There is a larger fruiting variety of the yellow Dragonfruit. They get to about 1 lbs.

Another high Brix variety is S8(Sugar Dragon).

The yellow dragon is more sensitive to cold. It is slow growing at first but once established, it grows rapidly.

Thank you both

Sugar dragon S8 ....... got it

I did read somewhere about crossing the yellow with red ....... anyone know a variety name for one of those hybrids or a source?

Any Florida growers doing well with varieties that are on the sweeter side?

This document attached below should help out a bit, it contains 15+ dragon fruit cultivar descriptions. Rather than top 3, which is limited by personal opinions & taste preferences, here's a thorough sheet with added culture and fertility characteristics. I have enjoyed many and they are all excellent, and we can't fail to remember how nutritive they all are. Happy fruiting...

See the paper it lists a yellow Selenicereus megalanthus & a yellow Hylocereus.

Hope this document helps, enjoy.

Saying "yellow" Dragon Fruit is very misleading. Not all yellow Dragon Fruit is very sweet. I have been told that 100s of small farm Dragon Fruit growers in Asia have invested in planting the wrong yellow Dragon Fruit.

First, you need to learn the difference between the three most popular yellow Dragon Fruit varieties (and their cultivars).

Yellow skin Hylocereus undatus.

Hylocereus megalanthus.

The recently imported Ecuador "Palora" Dragon Fruit. The jury is still out on if Palora is just a Giant Megalanthus variety, or some new hybrid.

Do some more research to make sure you get the yellow skinned Dragon Fruit variety you want.

Not always that easy, even for the Asian farmers. We can’t forget we need to find what is primed for our specific areas.

Frankie’s Red is a Hybrid between the yellow Megalanthus and a red fleshed variety if I recall properly.

Here is a thread on some Megalanthus hybrids.
