Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Slugs

I've heard that coffee grounds can help. I don't drink coffee, but maybe I'll buy a cheap coffee maker just for my garden.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Slugs
« on: April 16, 2024, 12:23:39 PM »
Anyone else battling slugs this spring in Socal? They've totally infested my container seedlings. They're on a table and the legs have tanglefoot. I've got a few slugs with beer traps. But, I'm losing the battle. They're eating all the new spring young leaves. Any ideas?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherimoyas and gophers
« on: October 29, 2022, 03:50:25 PM »
Has anyone ever had gophers attack Cherimoyas? I personally have not. But, at my last place, I started making gopher cages for everything I planted in the ground towards the end of living there. The cages did wonders for my dragon fruit. There would be gopher mounds right up against the cage, but they never got in. I also had three Cherimoya trees and the last one I planted, I put a gopher cage in, just cuz. But the gophers never made an appearance anywhere near the Cherimoyas. I was wondering if they don't mess with them since the roots, like the seeds, are toxic. Anyways, I'm about to put a Cherimoya in the ground at my new place and I'd rather not bother with the cage if I don't have to. Anybody have any input or experience with this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Can I graft Avocado seedlings now in August?
« on: August 27, 2022, 03:29:44 PM »
I have a bunch of avocado seedlings that are looking great. Some are about 1/4" diameter. Somebody on here is offering avocado scions. Can I graft now in August, in San Diego?

Do you know the variety of Ilama?

I have 5 S-8 red dragon fruit cuttings for sale. $5 each for the two smaller ones. $10 each for the three bigger ones. Also, have two established, rooted, S-8 plants in 1g pots. $20 each for both of those. I rooted them about 3 years ago. They really need to be repotted or put in the ground. But, they are very healthy. They produce smaller fruits, but they are by far the best tasting dragon fruits I've ever had. Deep dark red colored flesh.

$5 each; about 6-8 in. long:

$10 each; about 12-14 in. long:

$20 each:

San Diego local pickup only. Clairemont Mesa.  I haven't figured out how to start safely shipping, yet. Sorry.

Satya,

I received my Na Dai sugar apple and yellow Dragon fruit today. Only 2 days from Florida to San Diego! That's crazy! They look beautiful. Just like the pictures. So well packaged. And, bonus seeds! I wasn't expecting those. I will definitely try germinating them. Thank you so much! Great seller!

Cheers,
Adam

Is that just next to a window or do you have a grow light?

13
I third that.

14
What are you selling?  Seeds?  Scions?  Seedlings?

15
No, I live in San Diego.  Not the Claremont in L.A.
I would get a bag of cottonmeal, but I don't think you would want to ship to San Diego.  What nutrients does cottonmeal supply?

16
It was $27.50 for a 50lb bag.  I think that's a good price.  But yeah, the drive sucks.

I just bought a bag of Bioflora 6-6-5.  Haven't used it yet, but I know JF recommends it, and I really trust him.  The only place I could find it in San Diego was up in San Marcos, called Nutrien Ag Solutions(formerly Crop Production Services).  If you find it somewhere farther south, let me know.  I live in Clairemont.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Coco mulch vs coir fiber on Annonas
« on: April 10, 2019, 08:07:35 PM »
I looked into the mulch at the landfill, but it says that mulch is mixed with yard clippings and I was worried about chemicals being in it, like Roundup.  I think their wood chips are clean and I wouldn't mind paying for them, but again they will only fill a truck with 2 full yards.  I'm not sure if they'll just let me fill 3 or 4 trash bags like they do the free mulch.  I might just hit you up.

Cool.  Thanks, spaugh.  Do you know anywhere I can get a smaller amount of wood chips that I can pick up in my suv?  Most places like that will only load into a truck and only very large amounts.  I know I can get them from a tree trimming service for free, but they're gonna dump their whole load in my driveway and I don't need that much.  I probably only need half of a cubic yard at the most.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Coco mulch vs coir fiber on Annonas
« on: April 10, 2019, 12:21:42 PM »
There is a local urban nursery called City Nursery here in San Diego that says it has both coco mulch and coir fiber.  What is the difference?  I was thinking about putting one or both of these on my cherimoya trees that I am currently grafting a bunch of scions of other varieties and other annonas onto.  I'm creating sort of franken-annonas.  Would either of these be good to use as mulch or should I just use regular wood chips?  Has anyone from San Diego ever been to this nursery?
