Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Bloom in South Florida
« on: January 11, 2024, 04:11:31 PM »
The consistently cool weather we've been getting this month seems to have created a pause in mango bloom.  I guess it will resume when the weather warms up.  How will this affect the crop this year?  Any guesses?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Copernicia Baileyana PALM
« on: November 14, 2023, 03:28:10 PM »
It's not a fruit tree, but is anyone growing it?  It's a beautiful fan palm from Cuba, but the only place I've ever seen it is at Fairchild.  My son was at Fairchild last weekend, and I asked him if he saw the Baileyanas.  He found a lady in Satellite Beach who sells them, so he's going to plant one at his new house in Melbourne.  He's on his way to becoming a gardener!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / HELP: Topworking 5-ft. Mango Seedling
« on: September 24, 2023, 05:50:42 PM »
If I wanted to topwork this 5-ft. mango seedling to a named variety (probably PPK/LM), what would be the best way to do it?  Where to cut it?  Wait for new growth?  How to graft?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Hurricane Idalia

The Florida Big Bend area is going to get clobbered with storm surge comparable to Ian.  At least this is the least populous section of Florida coastline.  I hope everyone in Cedar Key evacuates because that little island will probably be 100% underwater.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Red Nemesis F1 Papaya
« on: July 09, 2023, 11:11:48 AM »
Has anyone grown Red Nemesis F1 papaya?  It sounds like it might be superior to Red Lady, which is a pretty good papaya that I've grown in the past.  I'll probably buy some seeds and give it a shot.  (And what would be the best type of pellet gun to buy to reduce the iguana population around here?  They love young, tender papaya leaves!)

Strong, sturdy plant, as is typical of this variety. Excellent fruit of the apple type.  We (you!) will dig carefully to preserve the roots.
PM me if interested.  It's free, but I won't refuse any mangos from your trees!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lemon Zest Mango in Melbourne, FL?
« on: June 23, 2023, 12:59:20 PM »
Does anyone have experience growing Lemon Zest in Melbourne, FL?  Do you think it would do good about 3 blocks west of the Intracoastal in a uphill location?  I've seen a mini-mango-orchard in the neighborhood, and the trees all seem to be healthy, thriving, and bearing fruit. My son bought a house, and I was thinking about planting Orange Sherbet and M-4, but maybe we should just go for it and plant what has arguably been described as the GOAT, OS's sibling Lemon Zest!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Orange Essence vs. Orange Sherbet Mango
« on: June 19, 2023, 11:50:50 AM »
If you had to choose between the two, which one would you plant?  I know that Orange Essence is "citrus-Gary" and Orange Sherbet is "citrus-PPK," but if someone, who has room for only 2 mango trees, is just looking for one of the best-tasting mangos, which one should he choose if his other mango is going to be M-4?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Raja Puri Bananas
« on: June 14, 2023, 01:42:18 PM »
I just got back from a 2-week vacation to find 2 bunches of Raja Puri bananas had ripened. The fruit had even started to split, maybe from the rain? This was my first crop. The plant set fruit in January so it took five months to mature the fruit. The plant was strong and sturdy, and semi-dwarf to medium, not tall. The flavor of the fruit is sub-acid and apple-like, and the size is medium, not a finger banana. My wife and I like it a lot, and I recommend this variety. I'll plant 2 new plants that came from pups.

I have avocados "fresh from the farm" in CA, untreated and unadulterated in any way.  If I want to start seedling trees from some of the seeds, what's the best method?  Here's the catch.  My family and I are going on a 2-week trip from the end of May to almost the middle of June.  I need to start this project when I return so how best to store the seeds until then?  Would refrigerating them be okay?  Thanks, guys.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Spring Rain on the Way for South Florida?
« on: April 06, 2023, 02:53:28 PM »
If you look at the 10-day forecast, it shows rain on the way starting Sunday.  Hopefully this has a positive impact on mango retention for mangos that are still developing towards May/June ripening.  Any that are already being harvested are bound to suffer some flavor/brix loss.  What do you think?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Murray Atemoya

The mighty Lula tree in my neighborhood still has fruit at the top.  It was literally a stretch, but I managed to pick me a bucket!  I revere this tree.  I started picking in late September.

Citrus General Discussion / Noble Juicy Crunch Tangerine
« on: January 17, 2023, 03:25:40 PM »
Since I know forum members are fruit connoisseurs, I thought y'all might like to know about this new tangerine, Juicy Crunch.  I came upon it by chance at Sprouts, and it's super sweet (very high brix), tasty, and seedless--an all-around exceptional fruit.  It's available at Publix and Whole Foods, too.  Check it out.  You won't be disappointed!  You can read the whole story at this website: https://noblecitrus.com/

End of season Monroe avocados. My box had 5 avocados, which weighed about 9.5 lbs. Beautiful fruit!

Which are the mango varieties that will set fruit every year in South Florida and do not depend on a certain kind of winter weather to stimulate blossoming?  Since we can no longer depend on consistent periods of cold in the winter, I think this would be good information to have.  Are Angie, Pickering, Cac, Honey Kiss, Little Gem, Sugarloaf, M-4, Orange Sherbet, PPK, and Lemon Zest in this group?  Others?  Thank you.  (I hope Alex reads this.)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Homegrown Lula vs. Supermarket (Mexican) Hass
« on: October 27, 2022, 02:54:16 PM »
There's a Lula avocado tree in my community, which is at least 40 ft. tall and loaded with fruit this year.  I've never seen so many avocados on one tree.  With my 25-ft. pole I've been picking a bucket a week for almost a month now.  I like them way more than the Mexican Hass that all the supermarkets around here sell.  Better quality, better flavor, even though Hass is considered a superior variety, which it indisputably is when grown, harvested, and processed properly.

(Fucking Mexican cartels!  Mexico--where human life has no value.  And I'm not speaking of the vast majority of Mexicans, who are kind, gracious, and generous people--they suffer and die also, especially indigenous people, because no government, army, and law enforcement are more corrupt.  Why are our supermarket chains supporting the cartels?)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help Me I D Banana Variety
« on: October 14, 2022, 02:00:19 PM »

This banana plant was sold to me by a nursery in WPB as "Goldfinger."  They said it was started from a tissue culture.  However, I've found no picures on the internet of Goldfinger leaves that look like this with the brown patches.  I have found Dwarf Cavendish pictures that look like this, and also found information that says it's a characteristic of the immature leaves of Grand Nain and Cavendish.  Also, the plant seems to be dwarf compared to the Raja Puri I'm growing nearby (which has had big leaves and a stout trunk from the start), and I don't believe Goldfinger is a dwarf variety.  Can anyone with banana knowledge help me out?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best Mangos from India Grown in Florida?
« on: September 02, 2022, 03:35:43 PM »
I've read that many Indian mangos don't reach their full flavor potential in Florida or don't produce well and consistently due to our different climate.  So which varieties are best when grown in Florida?  I don't want to eliminate USDA Himsagar even though it's probably not the Himsagar actually grown in India because I tasted it this summer, and it was very good.  A big plus would be if the tree were compact and dwarfish.  I apologize if some version of this topic has been covered before, but as we've had more experience with Indian mangos in the last few years, I think it's worthwhile to find out what the consensus might be.  India is the mango's motherland, after all.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Seedling Orange Sherbet Mango Tree
« on: August 07, 2022, 01:46:01 PM »
Does my seedling OS tree look the same as a grafted tree? It's supposed to be a polyembryonic variety, but the leaves seem a little delicate to me, unlike any other mango tree.

(I know it's too close to the house, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do in this seniors' community!)
