I love sour fruits, I tend to eat limes just as is. The only problem is the tooth enamel gets worn out, immediately after I will feel a grainy sensation on the teeth. I quickly wash my mouth out with water after consuming straight limes, lemons, etc.
Rinsing does not help, its too late at that point, the "damage" has been done...

Yeah I figured it wipes out the enamel, from what I read though the enamel rebuilds itself fairly fast. I have not eaten a lime for a while been a couple months, I usually use lime or lemon juice with water (+90%) and get my sour fix that way.

Opuntia sp. pads are also a nice subtle sourness flavor for a vegetable. I got pads which taste like lemon + green beans and lime + lettuce.
Nope, definitely not true.

On the other side I sell hundreds of kilos of the sour/acid Passiflora to restaurants , bars , ice cream parlors , they don't want the sweet ones .
Wait till you try the Garcinia cochichinensis , Adam .

Luc,

BTW....a little off subject...just got back from Cleveland, OH.

When I snatched this Rhus typhina (Staghorn Sumac) off the tree and started to eat it, my family thought It was a buffalo turkey leg I picked out of the park trash can.  HAHAHA.

This fruiting spike was sour like a lemon and delicious!  much better and more  palatable than the Rhus glabra by me.

Both species of Rhus are amazing with miracle fruit!!  Just be careful...there can be serious allergies (like mango/poison ivy).

Adam... the Romans didn't have lemons so they used sumac as a souring agent.  Currently in the middle east (in some places) sumac is still used.
Euell Gibbons also liked to take the berry heads and make "Rhus-ade" with a washing machine (not recommended).
Just make sure you don't harvest 'poison sumac'.
What's that got to do with Jose Andres $10 brussel sprouts?

I agree with Psidium acutangulum: big fruit, very nice taste but so sour !
I can add two Salacca : S.wallichiana and S.affinis and Butia capitata and the sourest is Asam Paya (Eleidoxa conferta).

Oops, the Rhus species I've been eating in FL is Rhus copallina, not glabra!

I need to graft a small batch of "Novak" jaboticabas.

it's an unidentified species that makes tart fruits, their flavor is intense!

My tree started to flower about 3yrs after I grafted it, and the scions I took were not even from mature wood.  That was quite a surprise.

The tree grows at a moderate rate...the growth habit is low and spreading...it reminds me somewhat of trunciflora, having slender, delicate foliage, but the fruits are the opposite of trunciflora...the flowers are on very very short peduncles, and the fruits are not large and sweet..they are medium/small, and acidic.  Also the bark of the Novak jaboticaba is peculiar, having an unusual peeling habit, and a dull appearance in my opinion...it's not as striking as the other myrciarias I've seen.

I have recently become an enthusiastic fan of eugenia stipitate (araça boi). Terrific in smoothies combined with avocado and stevia -- maybe with some milk or kefir too. My preference is for the sourness to be comgined with sweet.

Stipitata is high on my list of favorite sour fruits. I appreciate them out of hand. Intense sour, very delicious.

My friend has a variety of Eugenia stipitata that has pointed leaves instead of rounded .

The fruits are not quite as tart as the ones I've eaten from PIN (which have round leaves)

Also Eugenia pyriformis is much like e stipitata, but has less acidity, and a slightly different aroma and texture (being more firm).

still trying to figure out what species this Plinia is.

my only guess is Plinia cauliflora...but it's just a guess.

here is what i notice about this tree:

1) flowers have very short pedicles, born in tight clusters
2) precocious, only taking 3yrs from grafting to flowering, when using a very small scion
3) foliage smells like lemon/lime
4) fruits are sour and small, purple not black

Just tried my first one off my tree a few days ago. I loved it... no miracle fruit needed. But I also don't mind kumquats out of hand. I felt I could eat the Lemon drop all day long
