Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Yangmei (Morella/Myrica rubra) thread
« Last post by simon_grow on Today at 01:04:09 AM »
Thanks Nate!

I love Yangmei so much that I will still be ordering through Weee this year. I started thinning the fruit on some of the branches and I noticed that the fruit is covered in a type of resin that has a strong Yangmei/sandalwood smell. The smell makes me crave Yangmei so bad!

Since this is the first year I’ve fruited Yangmei, I don’t know how much natural fruit drop to expect from my potted trees. If my potted trees are able to hold a decent amount of fruit, I would guess that Yangmei will be a very coveted dooryard fruit tree for those gardeners that live in a climate suitable for growing this delicious fruit.

The texture of Burmese grape is nice. Both fruits I wouldn’t ever get super excited about eating but they’re usually around when not much else is, so they have that going for them.

I suppose the correct plant was actually Crataegus pubescens, but any variety of hawthorn that is yellow may help.  Actually, I'm interested in any good eating hawthorn tree that's a good price.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Ataulfo rootstock for Florida

Hey, I have many Ataulfo seedlings, some in pots and some in the ground. They grow well here, should be fine for grafting. I think Turpentine may grow faster and it produces a tons of seeds.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Citrus Breeding

Regarding the use of C. maxima (Pummelo) as a mother, I give you my first experiences: I had only 1 harvest last year and this year I have 5 fruits in different strains of C. maxima.  The first year I mixed Pummelo x: kaffir, Willow left mandarin, Buddha hand and Moro orange.  One fruit of each gave me 24 seeds on average each, but when pollinated by Buddha Hand it only had 6 and they were very small.  So he decided that by having statistically few fruits you could get some without seeds, but not because of the pollen.  Doing reciprocal crossings is great and seems ideal to me.  Chandler, for his part, I don't know if it is triploid, does anyone know?  because that can be detrimental and not be very fertile and if it hybridizes it can form 2n or 3n hybrids, so the mixtures could come out unequal (2 parts Chandler and 1 part Poncirus).  I will see this year what results I have from C. maxima x poncirus and x citrange troyer and I will tell you about the seed production.

Buddhas hand has no seeds though right? I wonder if thats just what you get when you try to cross BH with about anything?

just thinking out loud here

I only know of 2 buddha hand hybrids for ornamental use.  and they have no fingers.  Buddha's hand does not produce seeds just because it does not form the internal part of the fruit, neither pulp nor seeds, but it has excellent pollen and we will see in a few years what results from my crosses 💪.  There are images of Chinotto crosses and Buddha's hand and he did not give fingers, look it up on Google.

What is trifolis?

Trifolis is a Citrumelovariety which is said to have better fruit and
and a very good coldhardiness.

Citrangequat 10-3-4 is as far as I know not available in Europe, at least not under
that name.
We have this, perhaps similar variety:

Specifically looking for cherimoya and soursop. I don’t want to purchase the tree itself but rather just the fruit.

I know there’s a large Asian population out here, so I’m sure it’s around here somewhere. I just don’t want to go to every single grocery store in the peninsula aimlessly searching.

I’m currently staying in Daly City but will be going to Fremont today, so any store within that 40 mile range are feasible for a visit

Yes, same here I only have the following varieties that have fruit and either finish ripening or almost ready to be fully ripe:

- China White, ripe and some still getting there
- Peluche, low production
- Avri, low production
- Early Red, low production
- Vista White, still green fruits
- KT2-OCBC, this one has lots of fruits and all starting to turn color so it is doing the best.
- KT1, low fruit production
- KT3-KT31, low fruit production
- Big Jim, just ripening, very low production
- most of the other varieties have no fruits.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best loquat varieties

I don't have Sherrywood, I do have Sherry, and last time I tested the brix, it came in at 18,20,20.  That is pretty good for loquats.

Angelino/Argelino and Avri had brix 15-17.
