Ground Coffee, not coffee grounds
« on: March 05, 2012, 07:14:40 PM »
I know used coffee grounds are a good soil amendment. But what about ground coffee before it is perked? I have several pounds of rather old coffee that is never going to be brewed. Can I add it straight to the soil, or scatter on top around the plants, or should I brew the coffee first? Can I used dilute coffee to water plants? Anyone ever done this?

thanks,

Erica

I don't see how it could hurt if you use it straight.

Erica's plants may not be able to get a good night sleep for several nights?  ;D

Erica, it will be higher in acid (lower PH) before used so it will be even better.  :)

Thank you, all. I just wanted to make sure all that caffeine wasn't somehow toxic.

There was an article in the California Rare Fruit Gardeners magazine not long ago that mentioned that coffee grounds were toxic to some fruit trees. You may want to contact them.

I think the article was about using pure coffee grounds as potting soil. The test plants were tomatoes. Coffee grounds seem great as mulch but I would not use as potting soil myself.

Thanks,
