Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: First durian flowers!! - foliar spray ??
« on: October 14, 2014, 10:02:47 PM »
Greetings
Got the best surprise in a long time this week. Flower buds at varying stages on a 7 year old monthong/gan yaow cross
Hugely exciting !!!!!
There are some groups of buds that are clearly a couple of weeks older than others and I even found a couple of flowers on the floor when there are very small buds on other branches. Funnily enough the larger flower buds are all on branches that are only the diameter of my thumb whereas the newer buds are along the entire length of one single larger branch

I have never used foliar sprays before wonder if this would be a good time to start ?
I have the Triple Boost stuff recommended by the local nursery - kelp / fish / worm cast emulsion and would use it weekly ??
I have a couple of bags of cow manure that I was planning on spreading around too

Seem reasonable ?

kind regards
Jim

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: I ate my first cherimoya today!
« on: October 11, 2014, 06:41:09 PM »
There is a whole orchard of Cherimoya in Santa Barbara that sells throughout California. In diamond bar they have this awesome market that sells cherimoya and even sells even sell multigraft trees! Its the only place where I can find good tasting jackfruit year round.

How are you controlling the humidity for the durian? Could that be causing the drying of the buds?

Hey Mark,  Wanted to know if you have tried the more cold hardy avocados e.g. 'joey and fantastic . I wanted to get my uncle a tree, he lives in 8b. (Lancaster). If so, whats the comparison to Hass, or Day in this case.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: marang or spanish lime?
« on: August 28, 2014, 03:13:46 PM »
Spanish lime will be difficult to fruit in California.  Don't forget you generally need male and female trees in proximity.  Growing marang in Southern California would be an absolute cinch.......until you woke up and realized that you were just having a horticultural fruiting dream. There is zero chance of fruiting a marang there without a very, very large green house.

What about some of the more cold tolerant artocarpus species?  - Kwai Muk or jackfruit?

Nice! What it a seedling tree? What are the cultivars of the topwork? Fuerte, Reedo, Mayo... ?

JF Wow. Speechless. Is your Muricata grafted? If so, which Annona rootstock?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: pawpaw/cherimoya hybrid?

luak - I'm originally from near you (Central Oklahoma) and have been to Eureka Springs a few times. My experience is that things in pots behave differently than things planted in the ground. My cherimoya is one or two years younger than my pawpaws but because it is in a pot it is much smaller.

AlexRF - I'll try that plan. I will use it also for pollinating the cherimoya with cherimoya since just doing it once has never worked in the past.
Any updates?

I believe fairchild has them growing, they are very big bold tree & dioecious.
Expensive seeds if you can get them from the Seychelles.  Fruit take a long time to mature from pollination. We don't know what is the actual pollinators; bat, wind or insects.  Viable seeds cost a small fortune. You need to buy six viable seeds to insure a male & a female.  Most sold on market will never germinate.  Buy seeds that have actual sprout.  Empty shells are collectible for those into the erotica arts.  I was offered some thirty years ago, turn it down cause they will take a beating from Hurricane here in Florida.   :-\
I've seen pictures of a coco de mer palm in a private garden in south Florida. Am I imaging things?

I know of one in San Diego, that has been around a while, not great looking but it is surviving.

Amazing, Marsbars - enjoyed every minute of this article. i just wonder though,
how many folks in our non-tropical climate have successfully grown them for
years in a greenhouse or in a home with high ceilings and lots of windows...

Gary
There is one in the san diego zoo, as well as a jackfruit tree.

I really dont agree with posting links from other forums, but on palm talk there is a Topic that talks about California´s Cocos.http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/25082-updates-on-coconut-palms-in-california/page-2  Ive seen pictures of people growing them in unheated pool houses (if that's what you call them?), but they never fruited. Ive also seen pictures of them growing in a south facing wall of a house in Oceanside. Them seem to 'barely' survive (probably die), when they are by the southern coast of California from what I've heard and seen from others. Ive heard sucess with people tying heating cables to the roots. I dont know if its that much true though. Although there is a great deal of success when planted in a pot. I have even germinated a store bought coconut! It rotted, I believe because too much humidity. Oh well. :-\

I think there are some coconut palms also in San Diego area, but usually don't live long, and they ofcourse never fruit.
Hmm I dont recall seeing any when I went to san diego a couple of weeks ago.  But who knows? There one of may favorite fruits.  Ive heard in some places they grow almost like weeds. At least those Washingtonia palms grow well here.

Annona glabra Pond Apple
This guy describes this anonna as a pond apple hybrid. Idk if what he says is actually accurate, but nevertheless its interesting.

A. Glabra has started ripening up...here is my first pics from trees around a lake in the City of Boynton Beach...they have a very strong apple smell to them...there were a bunch of iguanas gathered around munching on dropped fruits...will update on taste when I cut into them..

Any update on the taste?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: A perfect guava
« on: May 04, 2014, 08:18:46 PM »
Thanks man, if not, I can cross polinize and/or graft with another varieties I have (many peruvian ones, some from Angola and now many brazilian too: roxa (purple), maça da india, yellow (the most sweet), etc)

A bit off topic, but you seem to know a lot about guavas. :) Is it possible to graft other guava varieties onto psidium cattleianum (strawberry guava)?

Anybody growing this majestic palm? Who has tried the fruit?  :)

44
Agreed! Most guavas are pretty sun tolerant, but yeah I have a 8ft tall strawberry Guava in LA county, full sun.

45
If I graft black gold onto a supermarket jack fruit seedling , will the jack still be cold hardy? And also what varieties have a chance of fruiting in southern California?
