Tropical Fruit Discussion / Repotting a leaning mango tree
« on: February 11, 2023, 08:39:34 AM »
I tried to add a few inches more of soil on 1 side of the container last winter but noticed it slowly leaned again in the summer when fruits got heavier.  Any idea how to correct the leaning issue this time around?

always grown fruit trees in backyard.  Or if potted, move it from front to back yard when fruiting.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango blooming but no fruiting
« on: March 16, 2019, 09:01:55 AM »
What'd be a likely cause for a potted mango tree to bloom normally but not one turned to fruit??
I dont noticed any sign of disease or noticeable issue on the tree, leaves are fine with plenty of blooming but not one flower become fruit.

It's $4 a pop at the TX Whole Food, man I'm debating if I should pony up....  some are pretty decent sized.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What is the best late season mango?
« on: June 01, 2018, 05:41:18 PM »
Keitt would be my favorite as an all around late season pick. The flavor is good (not quite excellent), but finding an excellent tasting mango that consistently produces late season is a challenge. Production is consistent and heavy. In Florida, crops can last until October in some years, but September crops are a sure bet.

Keitt can be extremely disease resistant, and it can also be very disease prone. I've seen both. But in a dooryard scenario, it tends more towards being disease resistant. I have had problems with MBBS, but a hard pruning seams to have solved the issue.

One thing to keep in mind when selecting a late season mango is that you can't be overly choosy. You are already selecting based upon a genetic rarity (a mango that produces late). Combining that with the other desirable but rare characteristics (eg, high production, good disease resistance, excellent flavor, etc) means even longer odds that you'll find a winner in the genetic lottery. So, typically we compromise a bit on flavor, which is why most late season mangoes are "good" (vs excellent).

ever heard anyone growing keitt in a container?

anyone got one?  Just curious how it does in a pot growth wise and fruit production wise?  Don't think it's even a "semi dwarf" variety?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / mango varieties that drop less fruit?
« on: April 26, 2018, 11:16:15 AM »
are there certain varieties of mango tree that tend to drop less than others?

Also, in general, does planting in-ground vs potted make a difference in fruit drop?

anyone mind take a pic or 2 of your pickering trees?  I bought one last year online and they just started fruiting this year but nothing dropped, I just want to verify if mine is indeed a pickering.

never had a chewy and firm sugar apple before.  Can anyone confirm Na Dai here are indeed chewy and firm?  Even when they're over ripe?

Ordered this from tropicaltreasure-us(ebay) a couple of months, finally growing leaves a few weeks ago, but more I look at it, don't think the shape of leaves look like sugar apple tree's leaves...  your take?

I have been growing the following mango trees in containers since the end of 2015:
1. Sweet Tart is growing in a 25 gal. container and is now setting fruit.
2. Coconut Cream is growing in a 45 gal. container which I pugged in July 2016.
3. Mallika is growing in a 25 gal. container is blooming presently.
4. Fruit Punch is growing in a 7 gal. container and is going to be stepped up to a 15 gal. this week.
5. Mahachanok is growing in a 45 gal. container is blooming and setting fruit presently.
6. Pickering is growing in a 25 gal. container is blooming and setting fruit presently.

The last four varieties are Honey Kiss, Cotton Candy, Kathy, and Phoenix are all growing in 3 gal containers.

nice trees.  If you're in FL, why not put them in the ground?  Not like you can move them now if there's any freeze in the winter....

Pickering pushing buds in 60gal fabric pot.

You sure thats a 60 gal?

I'm actually not sure and it looks a lot smaller in the picture.  It may be 60 divided by 2 :)

more like 15 gallon, 25 the most.

My Pickering in a 20gal rootmaker pot is blooming like crazy again, and it still has three golfball sized mangos from a little earlier in the season developing. Nice and pinkish purple. Its currently my best performer out of the 4 I have, but it had an unfair advantage of not getting raided by deer or those damn weevils that destroyed the tree or all the blooms(in that order). I hear Pickerings aren't the best tasting compared to some others, but the taste is very subjective, but it seems to be a good all round general grower and producer that the weevils that attacked mine simply ignored.

so how you like the taste of your pickering then?
