Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 2014 Guavas
« on: October 01, 2014, 01:12:21 AM »
How long did it take your guava to ripen on the tree before you picked it? My Barbie pink fruit have been on the tree for like three months with no dimpling of the skin, no smell coming from them, no softness... Just wondering before I go pulling them off one by one like the stubborn guy I am

Google works. Also, the website was provided in the FAQs post by Sheehan. But here is the link http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/

I hope that isn't the PC tree. If so, I guess destroying it instead of offering it to those who have recently joined this forum, or are new to growing their own fruit was a mature decision. Hopefully nobody reading this takes your approach to tree care.

Pulled Excalibur and magana Mamey, they never grew despite everything else growing around them... Much was done to try and remedy the situation. I have a pantin that is growing fine.
Pulled papaya due to fruit fly.

Just wanted to throw this out there... the irwins I had this season were the best mangoes I have had this year.

You have got to get out more  :) ;D
Haha, it's true though. Better than Jakarta, Haden, rosi gold, ndm, psm, cogshall, and equal to ppk. Ppk will always be one of my favorites. I like it more than the infamous lemon zest it spawned.

Where ever it is it looks like at least some maintenance is being performed, and there are no (limited) weeds at the trunks.
There is no maintenance being performed. These are on private property although there are no posted signs. Weeds don't grow around the bases of huge shaded mango trees.

My custard apple seedlings don't look like that... The one on the right does not look to be in the annona family...

This sounds amazing. Can't wait.

Geez man, so you were the reason there were only three mangoes per bucket left? Haha, good haul. If you haven't made it there this year, eleven varieties are ripe this week.

A friend of mine swears by cutting it flat at the base and letting it sit on a plate of water until the roots get an inch long. I just stick the sucker in the ground after I pull off a few of the bottom leaves. Both work good.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: New Zill Mangos Info
« on: May 22, 2014, 02:32:19 PM »
Read thru all of these posts again.  Some really good observations.  I'm in the process of top working an old NDM in the greenhouse...with mixed success so far.  The info here will help me determine a few other varieties I will try and add onto the tree.  I've tasted a bunch of different ones last year while visiting, but not many of the newer ones mentioned by Rob, Jeff, and some others.

So far I have Edward and Lemon Zest which has been on the tree since last year.  I just tried a few others and so far St. Maui is pushing growth while a few others have potential.  The thing that concerns me is the growth.  Flushes coming from the NDM look fine while new and old growth coming off the Edward and LZ look like shit.  I'll have to get some pics.  The old NDM used to grow like crazy but these two have been very shy about it.  My grand experiment is not turning out so grand!   :(
Thanks.

I have heard one variety will eventually dominate on a Cocktail mango tree, so such trees are not often grown.
One variety will dominate on a multi grafted tree if not cared for properly or pruned, or if you get a vp along with a coconut cream and a cogshall on the same tree, of course the most vigorous will take over. Same with grapefruit (very vigorous) grafted with lime and orange... It's a no brainer

why are you so butthurt about Excalibur?

Excalibur is the largest retail fruit tree nursery in the area; I see that Excalibur has the potential to be a much better nursery than it is.  I have heard a lot of horror stories about Excalibur, but most people requested that I not repeat them.
so you slander a reputable nursery based not on your own experiences, but on "others who shall not be named"? Sounds fair. Ill let people know not to go to your house because it smells like a burnt diaper, so and so told me not to reveal their identity, o yea and all of his 3g mango trees snapped in half from the bushels of fruit on them

My SK sets a ton of fruit, and the next closest carambola is four streets over... Idk if mine was mislabeled at zills or not, but I have never had any problems with it setting fruit or being a light bearer. It is a super sweet fruit with an awesome orange color.

Thought I would share this picture. It's my friend lazaro and his jaboticaba  tree. He's from the southern part of Brazil where jabo is native to. He has several, this is the best looking one.
He also lives one house away from the Winchester property. Mr. Winchester used to own a ton of dairy farms and land in Boynton, notably the old Motorola land, and everything where renaissance commons and target and best buy and Wal-Mart and the like are currently built upon. In his yard is a 30 year old jabo, a 40ft spreading sapodilla, and many mango trees.

At station two, we have a Mauritius lychee, Marcus pumpkin avo, a seven foot tall seedling avo that we hope will put out good fruits... No plans to graft on to it now, we have nine or ten smaller avo seedlings that we will graft with various Hawaiian cultivars, a Multi grafted citrus, an Excalibur Mamey and magana Mamey. On the back patio is a jaboticaba surrounded by sweet pepper plants, tomatoes, and carrots. We also have several banana mats starting... From dwarf cavendish, to a black cavendish variety I got from a Cuban, plantains, dwarf namwah. And another dwarf variety that has only grown  a foot in two years, despite all the ones next to it growing multiple feet and shooting out pups. My goal this year was to get several trees and the fertilizer to take care of them, and it was approved. It helps that on my shift there is another ff who likes fruit trees and veggies, and another ff on another shift that tends to the herb garden we have outside the kitchen

What the hell is a black cavendish? I have never heard of that, and being cuban I know of the cuban propensity to make up names for things they dont know the name of. So can you shed some light?
You all love making up names. The "donkey smasher" plantain he gave me was probably just "burro", but he said you make tostones from them, and fried plantains from the Hawaiian plantains. He called it black cavendish because the entire pseudo stem was black, instead of green or brown as other varieties... It grew to about twelve feet and then fruits, with the flower and fruit about six feet in length.

Does anyone local to palm beach county have a mature banana mat in need of some thinning? I just cut down a bunch of palms and am looking to put banana trees in their places... Not super picky, I'll dig them out myself. If you want to trade bananas for bud wood from any of my trees, I am open to that.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jackfruit care
« on: May 05, 2014, 04:34:00 PM »
All three of my jacks do this. As new growth pushes, leaves that are at the proximal end of the branches turn yellow and fall off. The trees are all very healthy. I never have a large amount of yellow leaves dropping, only a handful every month, but the trees stay very bushy. My carambola does this twice a year as well....
