Tropical Fruit Discussion / Black dragonfruit

Just out of curiosity, is anyone in the US growing the ‘Black’ dragonfruit? I’ve got growers from the US looking for cuttings.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragonfruit stigma colour.
« on: February 02, 2021, 04:18:08 AM »

There’s a theory going around in relation to the stigma of dragonfruit flowers. Yellow stigma is self sterile(needs to be cross pollinated), green stigma self fertile (will pollinate itself).
The pics are from Purple Haze (Yellow stigma and self sterile), and Sugar Dragon (green stigma and self fertile).
Any ideas?

Just thought I’d share with everyone some pics of the benefits of grafting young seedlings onto mature rootstock or existing plants. This one is grafted onto a side shoot of a mature plant. The seedling scion was 6 months old,  probably as thick as a pencil when grafted and was held in place by 3 clothes peg. I’ve tried to repeat the process a couple of time but all have failed unfortunately. Luck played a big part I’m thinking. Graft was done on about the 1st of July, so middle of winter. Growth has been impressive and I’m hoping it will flower this summer. Pics didn’t load in order,  sorry about that.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragon Fruit Australia
« on: July 07, 2020, 05:12:34 AM »
A group of Aussie dragonfruit fanatics have recently started the Dragon Fruit Australia facebook page. Since there are plenty of keen new growers in Oz, I directed them here to check out the Dragonfruit thread. It was a wealth of  great info for me when I first started down the road to my dragonfruit addiction. Hopefully the new growers in Australia can learn as much from the Tropical Fruit Forum as I did. 👍

So, what’s the story on this new variety? The big news in Oz is that it can keep for up to 12 months in the fridge😳😳😳😳. Only being grown in Washington State for the next 10 years with 12 million planted already. Must be good.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New name for dragonfruit?

I’ve noticed on a local site that they’ve changed the Hylocereus to Selenicereus. Is this a thing?

2 billion to own commercialization rights of pink purple flesh dragon fruit
This is the first time Vietnam scientists hybridized and established commercialization rights for breed of dragon fruit. Purple pink flesh dragon fruit LD 5 was registered by a company in Binh Thuan who bought the rights from Southern Fruit Research Institute for 2 billion.

Southern Fruit Institute for red flesh dragon reported that breed was not protected and taken by “impartial” countries. Therefore, the selling of commercialization rights of LD5  will mark a change in the consciousness of people about commercialization rights for plant, and will create a brand of Vietnam fruit in the international arena.

Flesh dragon fruit is pink purple and bred from classic red flesh dragon Long Dinh and Cho Gao dragon fruit, white-fleshed, with superior features such as strong bloom and almost throughout the year, with the ability to pollinate naturally to generate results.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Frosted jakfruit
« on: July 22, 2018, 06:29:17 AM »
Planted 10 Jakfruit seedlings last spring, most of which are 5ft tall at the moment. Recently had a wicked, unusual cold snap that totally fried all but 1 tree. There are other trees in my area that are 20ft tall that had all their leaves completely frozen. I obviously have 1 very cold tolerant Jakfruit but will the other 9 come back in time? One has already started sprouting at ground level and the 1 unaffected tree is growing as well as it ever did with no sign of frost damage.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What citrus is this?
« on: April 18, 2018, 05:35:59 AM »

Can anyone tell me what this citrus is? Picked them up at work, thinking they were limes. Shape was a bit weird but skin colour was green.  Thin skinned and super juicy with a few seeds. Flesh was light orange and flavour was that of a nice grapefruit. Tahitian lime on left.

Picked a few of these up at work (on the right), and I was hoping that someone could tell me what they are.  I thought they were just big limes but when I cut them, they were more orange inside with a nice grapefruit flavour with a few seeds.  Fruit on the left is a Tahitian lime.

Thanks, Anthony

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bees pollinating dragonfruit
« on: December 12, 2017, 03:46:00 AM »
Has anyone noticed their Dragonfruit flowers opening slightly in the early afternoon, just enough to allow access for bees? This has been happening here for the last couple of days and by the time I go out to collect pollen when the flower is fully open, there is no pollen left!
The bees have to crawl through the opening and across the stamen, so hopefully they have paid a visit to different varieties, in order to cross pollinate.
I couldn’t upload a video but it’s on my instagram for those who are interested, #lockyervalleydragonfruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ocamponis x coniflorus dragonfruit
« on: November 18, 2017, 05:25:16 AM »
I received a cutting of this from Ethan Moses a few years back and I was wondering if anyone else, or Ethan, has any information on this variety. Mine is fruiting for the first time this year and would like to compare pics/info. All I know at the moment is that it’s a prickly little sucker. Will add a pic of young fruit tomorrow.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Honey Mango - Pakistan
« on: June 27, 2017, 04:15:29 AM »
I saw a couple of trays of 'Honey' mangoes from Pakistan in one of our local fruit shops @$4 each. They were fully yellow, shaped a bit like a NDM, with wrinkly, shrivelled skin. Are they worth buying, worth growing from seed? I also read that it could be 'Ataulfo'???? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cereus Peruvianus with pink/purple flesh.
« on: October 04, 2016, 04:34:29 AM »
After reading a few posts this week in regard to C.Peruvianus with flesh colour that isn't white, I'm just wondering if anyone has a few pics of different flesh colours in this variety. I haven't seen any colour variations in Peruvianus in Australia.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruiting Epiphyllum's.
« on: May 13, 2015, 07:51:49 AM »
This topic has drawn my interest for a while now and info on fruiting epis seems to be difficult to find. In this thread I'm looking for good/great fruit from named epis from growers who have a solid reputation. Not maybes or I think!! A lot of epis have excellent fruit with great hybrid potential.
This is one I've crossed already. Epi has the texture of Turkish Delight and similar flavour.  Variety is Argus, sourced from Matts Landscape.  Not huge but very nice.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Eating Dragonfruit pollen???
« on: December 29, 2014, 05:54:37 AM »
As a keen grower of Dragonfruit, I was wondering if anyone had given any thought to using the large amounts of pollen available for human consumption. I know there is a lot of talk about bee pollen and its associated health benefits and it would seem to me that fresh pollen should be just as beneficial as bee pollen, and for some months of the year, much easier to collect. Any thoughts?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragonfruit disease.
« on: October 23, 2014, 02:26:08 AM »

Hi. I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about this type of thing or has ever seen it before. It has appeared on one of my plants and starts out as a small reddish brown dot and slowly radiates out from the centre in a circular fashion. Sometimes it will appear as an smudge with no shape at all. Affected area isn't raised or swollen. Up close when cut out, the discoloration seems to be in the veins of the flesh. Doesn't seem to affect the growth of the plant unless it occasionally starts to rot, at which point I cut it out and bin it. Plants growing close by have remained unaffected. Any ideas???
