Humiriaceae - Information on family !
« on: June 11, 2015, 11:07:41 AM »
First I met this family was thanks to Vitor, or Brazilian member in this forum. From Whom I got two Endopleura uchi seeds. Unfortunately my seeds went bed, as I couldn't personally take care and my relatives weren't serious. But in future I definitely retry it.
However as i understand, this small family offers different other interesting edible species. Maybe anybody can give some more information on edible species, taste, uses......
In the Internet only limited sources seem to be available.
Thanks

I believe Endopleura uchi is a monotypic species, within the genus endopluera...it's a very beautiful tree, with a fruit that has a very high oil content...I believe it's processed into ice cream and other food items, or dishes...

not sure if they eat it fresh much....but wouldn't be surprised.

also I have read that it is a tall tree (30m)..and cold sensitive..or else I would have tried growing it already.

Adam,

Humiria contains some edible species, cultivated to a limited extent by indigrnous groups in South America according to Jim Duke. Sacoglottis and Vantanea also reportedly produce edible fruits. The family contains eight genera containing about sixty accepted species.  I have read there are medicinal uses in this family as well.

thank you for the info!

so the genus is monotypic, not the species!

I am not familiar with the South American Sacoglottis but gabonensis sounds interesting (supposedly tastes like banana bread -- no idea on how much pulp there is).  However, I have had seeds for over a year and no signs of germination so I am not real optimistic (but also no sign of rotting).  I have not totally given up hope as I have had some African seeds take over a year to germinate (Gnetum).
