Does Black Sapote set fruits easily?
«

Last year it had less than 5 flowers, no fruits. I just counted almost 100 flowers just now. I've never tasted one fruit. Maybe I'll get lucky this time.
Thanks.

I heard some varieties need another plant for pollination.

I had a 2 year old seedling flower last year and set a couple fruit.
This year there are 10+ fruit and counting. The tree I have is a seedling Silas Wood.

I don’t really know about growing black sapote in a container but your tree looks very small to me to support these fairly large and heavy fruits. Black sapote wants to grow into a huge tree. I know that they can be shaped into a smaller tree but the ones that I have seen with fruit are pretty good size.

The tree will probably drop a lot of these flowers, so it will only keep what it can support. I have a spot in the yard for it if the fruit is worth it..It's' a good thing black sapote seems to withstand the cold in my area just fine.

Actually, it should do very well in CA. The best black sapote trees I have seen are in Oaxaca which is dry, and although far to the south, has altitude and can have very cold periods in the winter.

When I first got my tree it was about the same size as yours. I got 30 fruit from it about the size of a tennis ball. I had to support the branches with other poles. It was in a 15 gal pot. It was a real pain because I had to water it daily and fertilize it A LOT.
Its in the ground now, about 8 feet tall. this year there were easily 200+ flowers and fruit set on about 20% of them. They are golf ball size now.
I do not have another tree for pollination, It's self fertile.
