The US Customs department intercepted a shipment of 105,000 boxes of clementines from Morocco that were infected by the Mediterranean fruit fly. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, the Mediterranean fruit fly is the most destructive pest in the world for the agricultural industry.

here is another thanks to the customs inspection officials at the US boarder:
Us Customs and Border Protection officers in Pharr, Texas found 3,947 pounds of marijuana which was hidden inside hollowed out limes on January 30. The drugs were found in a produce truck crossing the Texas Mexico border near the Gulf of Mexico and was found thanks to an imagining inspection system and a K-9 team.

Evidently, the K-9 dogs know the difference between marijuana and limes.

Stuffing all of that pot into those hollowed out limes had to have taken a lot of time.

Good for those dogs!  I was at the Vet today and read that dogs only have about 1500 taste buds, and humans have about 9000.  I guess those dogs are really talented discerning the difference between such a strong odor (limes) and the pot. Maybe they have extra olfactory sensory power that makes up for their limited taste bud supply.

The dog sense of smell is incredible and well documented other places. Their smell ability compared to human abilities has been said to be like ultra high definition 3 d compared to black and white tv. When one of those dogs sit down in the presence of a suspect that usually means they have locked in on what they have been trained to smell for. Often there is no agitation or other obnoxious signs. Usually the handler will ask simple questions and the 'quarry' has a lot to answer for. Of course different dogs are trained for differently for different situations. They are amazing ! Tom
