What is the best/most favorite fruit tree in your backyard?
« on: January 05, 2017, 02:36:19 PM »
So,  I have two last spots to plant something (I can't decide what),  so I'm hoping to pick the best from the best of everyone yard lol!

I live in So Cal and currently have Hawaiian Papayas, African Pride Atemoya,  Hasya Sapodilla,  Sweetheart Lychee,  Kishu Tangerine, Li Jujube,  Chocolate and Fuju Persimmons,  "Cát" Mango,  Hass Avocado, Seedless Guava, Longan, Wax Jambu, Grapefruit, Kumquat,  and Lemons!!  Is there any must - haves that I missed?

I agree probably another mango like lemon zest or coconut cream. Also consider a jack fruit or another guava like Diamond.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Where is cherimoya? That's one of world's best fruits, and you're in one of the few areas where it grows well. I'd have a grove of cherimoya trees.

She's probably like me who prefer atemoya over cherimoya.

What about adding a Lisa atemoya? Or cay coc

My favorite go to fruits are my large collection of persimmon. I have a atemoya that might fruit this year, my red Jabo is pretty good too.

This past week I ate silas wood sapodilla, red jaboticaba, cherry of the rio grande, indian jujube, and Jamaican cherry.
Whenever I have a ripe fruit in my hand that I grew it is my favorite. I couldn't pick one fruit that is my favorite,  I hope I never have to
stop planting new trees. Its just math, there's always a way to squeeze another plant in. Good luck only planting 2 more trees. You do have a
great assortment of trees. I would keep diversifying.

Are there peach cultivars that would do well in San Diego?

A tree-ripened peach can be SO much better than a store-bought one.

Cherimoya. Even if you prefer atemoya, having cherimoya will extend your fruit season.

Sugar apple. Get a chewy one if you like.

Loquat. Has small fruits now and ripens around April, before all the stone fruits and after the mandarins.

Lemon. According to the lemon snobs:) in the citrus subforum, any meyer lemon should go to the chipper and replaced with a real one.

Pomegranate if you're not right by the coast.

White sapote. 'suebelle' is pretty low maintanence. Others are better but may need pruning to keep small.

Banana?

Very nice trellised persimmons. You have a system there! What month do they look like this? Now?

Ok, so I forgot to list a few things :D.  I do have one potted and one in-ground Cherimoya,  both 3 - 4yo seedings that have yet fruited (hopefully this year).  My hope is to have two cocktail Cherimoya trees,  unfortunately I never have a chance to learn/come around to grafting.  I also have two young bananas.  My neighbor has a Pomegran
ate that he gives me owner rights to all the fruits lol.

I'm thinking about adding another Mango and maybe another Sapodilla or just a boring but useful Orange tree?  I love Jackfruit too,  but am afraid it is going to get too big for the spot (a 8-10ft radius from the neighboring trees).

One of the better consistent irange trees would be a Cara Cara Navel.

You should really get some of the better named and grafted cherimoya trees.

If you go with a mango, it would be recommended it be on a California compatible rootstock.  Sweet Tart on Manilla will do well for you.

How is the Indian Jujube compared to the "normal" one ?
i have a few regular Jujube (Li, Coco, Sherwood), and i have 1 indian i am growing from seed
it shot up 3 ft in no-time.
i just repotted it,  and will probably have to find a spot for it in ground
but if its very inferior to the others, it might not be worth it.

i have a large white guava that is soft and custardy sweet
My Jujube have been a source of smiles as well.
I wouldnt want to get rid of any of them.

I second the cara cara. I've tried a lot of citrus and I can say that cara cara and blood orange are the two best I've had.
The hardest plants to grow are often those most worth growing.

I think you should have Mamey Sapote, because they're so nutritious and tasty.  My favorite fruit tree is Durian.

A member after my own heart, lol! I soooo agree with this!

Has the OP considered olives or almonds? Not everyone can grow those well, so being in a region where they grow might make them worth considering. Also, what about grapes or dragonfruit? Growing something on a fence or trellis might give you more room to add more than just 2 plants. :)  I'm not an expert on SoCal grow conditions to recommend much, and I am terrible at picking a favorite in my own yard, but these are some thoughts to consider. Also, mulberries are a prolific producer, so may be worth considering.

All of these are assuming of course you have the water to spare for such an endeavor, which environmentally may not be feasible or responsible. If not, edible cacti would be a much better choice. I would also add to consider growing moringa, and Angelica keiskei.

You might learn a lot from watching this guy, who has a ton of youtube videos and himself lives in SoCal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbfOWooFOSw
