Here's a mini feast that I had today. Sarteneja Red Custard, Amazon Rollinia, Alano & OX Sapodilla plus grapefruit. Good eating!

Does the Sarteneja Red Custard produces well without hand pollination?

I need to start hand pollinating, my custard apples have terrible production, I am getting 3-4 fruits a year from big trees if im lucky.

The fruit looks great Noel, I am jealous!

Annona reticulata is what FGM has in the picture and its common name is custard apple or  bullock's-heart

Annona squamosa is common name sugar apple

Looks great Noel!  I know the rollinias are excellent but haven't tasted the Sarteneja yet, maybe I'll let my tree hold a fruit this year?

The Sarteneja is from my friend's place nearby. The tree is about 15 ft high and regularly consistently produces about 50 to 75 fruits without hand pollination. They are very good tasting but I must say that the bigger fruits are better than the smaller ones.

This Biriba has loads of delicious lemon custard flavored pulp. One of the best tasting annonas. Fruits can grow to 7lbs on my tree.

FGM great pix, being an artiste you'll have to get one of those french caps. The sarteneja is what I am really interested in as I have a few seedling from seeds supplied by a generous floridian chum.

A. reticulata has been called bullocks heart here for 100 years and custard apples have been atemoyas for 100 years.Even the names are upside down, down under.I have had many A.reticulata that have had a John Wayne thing going on.....they have had true grit. The technical term I believe is shiphouse. From all I have heard, I am confident sarteneja will restore my respect for this species.

Sounds delicious, hope to try it in a few years if mine fruits. I've tried quite a few (red reticulata) in the Yucatan and Belice that were decent but nothing like yours.

Mike
Sarteneja is a top notch annona and you will enjoy it. I have tasted at least ten varieties and this is among the best of the reticulatas. Very sweet and a complex strawberry taste. The "wild" ones you find in the Caribbean island markets are pretty bad. They say the best of all is the elusive "Benque".   "Canul" and "Tikal" are also very nice.

I got to taste a red custard apple for the first time today.  I bought a 2 pounder from Robert is Here a week ago.   I really loved the taste.  Your description fits pretty well!  Unfortunately, the fruit did not ripen evenly.  The top inch was really soft but the rest was pretty hard and crunchy.  I still ate the crunchy parts, it was that good.  Was my fruit picked too early or do these tend to ripen unevenly?

Nice Noel. How does the Sarteneja taste?

They will easily fruit in a pot and so hand pollinating them is as simple as Cherimoya or Sugar Apple

Uneven ripening can happen if picked too early or those few cold nights we had may have contributed. They are still good as you mentioned. Do you know what cultivar Robert sold you? It does not seem to be Sarteneja.

When I asked Robert, he told me it was red ilama.  I could not get the conversation past that point.  It was a big waste of my time.  I don't think he liked me telling him it was not ilama but he agreed it was reticulata.  I don't think I am even going to bother asking him about cultivars anymore because I have never gotten an answer the four or five times I have asked him.  I can't wait until all my newly planted trees are producing fruit so I can stop the trips altogether.  There were only two other fruit in the "ilama" pile that looked like they came from the same cultivar.  The others were 2/3 the size and had a darker red black color.

If he told you that was an Ilama, he is clearly confused about his annona fruits.  Ilamas have a very hard shell for a skin and don't ripen until late summer! Also, Ilama seeds are light brown and among the largest of the Annonas. I have seen true Ilamas for sale at Robert's but not for many years.

ive spoken to Robert a couple of times about fruit and he did not have much knowledge about varieties. i think he is more of a business enthusiast than a fruit enthusiast

I just wanted to bump your post to the top again so I didn't have to search to find those pictures... I can't wait to get some of the red annonas going in my yard (hopefully the grafts take).  Anyway, FGM... that's a harvest to be proud of!  Makes me want to move to Florida.  Here's what I was able to collect (while dodging rattlesnakes)...

Passion Fruit, Chicken fruit (aka common egg), Banana, Avocado, Guava, Tangerine, Orange
