The good, bad, and ugly.

Joellen, displaying her bounty of mediocre fruit. The tiny splash of red is a bud sport, with a red blossom.

Lemon Zest has flushed more new leaves than it had to start with -- very exciting.

Best crop ever for Magana.

My young jackfruit trees looked great just two weeks ago.   :'(

We found some sticks by the curb, and stuck them in a pot.   :)

Nice! :) Do you fertilize or give any other special treatments to the magana mamey besides watering?

Alexi,

The mamey almost never gets watered or fertilized.  It's a mature tree, and is partially shaded by a mahogany tree.

I do throw any fruit or vegetable scraps from the kitchen under the mamey tree, though. A friend told me I am "composting in place"  but mainly the mamey  is closest to my front door, so it gets the vegetable scraps.

In contrast, my Pantin mamey has never gotten past the stage of being very drought-sensitive.  If I don't water it during hot weather it drops all its fruit; I haven't eaten a Pantin in all the many years I've had the tree....

Mangomandan, do you not have rodent problems by "composting in place"?

Nice Lemon Zest!  I tuck food scraps under the tree mulch and no rodent digging so far

I wonder if maybe you could graft a little Pantin onto your Magana?  Poor jack tree. :'(

So far no rodent problems.  Maybe the raccoons and stray cats scare them away.  I don't put meat scraps out; possibly that makes a difference too.

great looking Magana! I hope to have one in a little while.

I hate those red 'stick' plants. My neighbor has them along the fenceline and they are weedy, vigorous and a beacon for huge grasshoppers that then migrate to my fruit trees.

Considering the winter spells we just had, your jackfruit trees look real good. Mine almost got killed. But, they're back now with a vengeance. It's good to have the winter behind us.

need to pull that grass/weeds away from the trunks and crown roots.

Prior to today and yesterday, how much water have the jackfruits gotten?  They are small and newly planted, and we have not had that much rain and temps are warming...it may be lack of water that are hurting them.

The LZ does look good...and those long strappy leaves are normal.

Are the "sticks" the healthy copper leaf in the picture?

Rob,  I think you're right on all counts.  I'll work on those weeds tonight.

I've been trying to keep the young jacks well watered, but there was a stretch of warmer weather when I was out of town for a week.

One of the IFAS publications indicates that too much water is also bad for jackfruit trees.  But in our sandy "soil" that doesn't seem like it would be a major problem.  I haven't had any flooding in my yard in quite a few years.

We hardly ever buy ornamental plants, but found the copper leaf prunings by the side of the road.  It seems a lot tougher than the hibiscus and gardenias I've killed in the past.

Leo, I guess I didn't realize that even Dade County gets some cold dry winds in the winter.  Glad your trees are doing better now.

Thanks, Steven.

As a Whisperer,  do you think young jackfruit trees are more susceptible to underwatering or to overwatering?

I've tipped it a couple times over the last year. But it still waited till it was good and ready to flush out.

Maha put out a small flush of long juicy leaves, then an ordinary flush. Now it's in a holding pattern.  I hope I still like mangos when I'm ninety.

Hi Dan,
:) I agree with, Rob...more susceptible to under. Do you fertilize the tree? I always give my tree some fert, during the growing season and I also water the plant well :)

Thanks again, gents.

For a couple months I gave them liquid fertilizer.  About 3 weeks ago I gave them a single handful each of 8-3-9 granular.     I broadcast it over roughly 2 ft by 2 ft area.   I don't think that would be enough to burn them, but it was another possibility, I guess.

This wouldn't be the first time that hotter weather did not inspire me to be more vigilant about watering.

Dan,
Your fertilizing scheme is great. Just give the badboy more juice...aren't you guys getting rain now, in Florida?
