Gibberellic acid used to make seedless Fruit
« on: April 08, 2012, 03:10:47 AM »
I was wondering if any of you have ever used Gibberellic acid to make seedless fruit? Check out this article about rambutan:

Thanks,

Ed

great topic,  I hope some of the knowledgeable growers throw in their 2 cents...I've never sprayed any hormones on plants (for making seedles fruits).

I'm eager to see where this dicussion ends up!!

I remember a post in the forum a while back about seedless lychee, maybe they are using gibberelic acid on those as well? Interesting article. From Oscars post about rhambutan importation laws changing and this use of gibberelic acid making seedless rhambutans more enjoyable, over the next couple years rhambutan may become all the rage!

It would be nice to have some seedless jaboticabas also! I was eating the yellow jaboticaba when I thought about this and started searching the web! Would love to try it on them!

Seedless lychee is genetic, no need to spray anything. With rambutan you only get the result if every flower panicle is sprayed with GA3. According to Dr. Zee the seedless lychee still has a seed but is very small. He said it's worth getting.

Oscar how do we get any of those seedless lychee plants?

I was thinking about this gibberellic acid treatment for Yellow Jaboticaba OR Cabelluda (Myrciaria glazioviana) since the seed is so huge and barely any pulp!

Thanks,

Ed

I'm pretty sure if you spray the acid on annona flowers, it helps them set fruits...someone once told me this, but I've never tried...I wonder if it makes them seedless??  I doubt it, because we would have heard of that before.  Gibberellic is so common u would think they've tried it on just about everything....but I've never sprayed it on anything..so what does that tell u!

I don't really know squat!

Yes, i'm asking myself the same question? How to get that seedless lychee?? Seems like the nursery that shipped the Myrica rubra recently also carried this plant?
About the cabelluda, i have a selection that is much larger, so more pulp. I sent seedlings to a few members already. I'm also working on getting the M. guaquiea (sp?) which is very similar but also much bigger fruit. The problem with gibberelic is you have to spray every time. Much easier i think to deal with genetics than altering plants with sprays.

There is already a seedless loquat cultivar developed in Japan, but has not been released for distribution yet.
