Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: The Jackfruit and its relatives

In my area marangs have been brought in and were selected from many original locations in the philipines and Indonesia. It is interesting that like many artocarpus they are extremely variable in fruit form and fruit quality and range to over 3 kg in some varieties. Some may recall pix of a few I have previously posted. The bulb size, aroma strength and muskiness vary between types. The one in the shot below looks like what I would call  philipine large bulb type.
Eating fresh is probably the best way to consume them and they don't freeze well.

Seems right. The fruit I get are about 1.2-1.5 Kg. You are also right on freezing, the flesh is just to delicate. I make icecream from this as a method of saving the fruit.

To Delvi - Think of a creamy banana, add milk and a light Dorian aroma, the flesh is soft, moist and  you can suck it off the stone/seed clean and easy. The seeds can be dried and made into flour, great for gnochi - Ok here as its cheap(ish).

Hobo, sweet and sour, tart but pleasing, flesh is silky but sticks to the seed, one could say its like a mangosteen with a lemon accent,  it makes a excellent sorbet. Very  tangy and leaves you telling people about it...

JackFruit is one versatile fruit;   I use for cooking, the JF young makes a great curry or coconut milk dish with shrimp, the fruit has a texture of a meat, ripe is the bomb, I eat it fresh, dry it as dehydrated fruit, smoothie it, make jam and Chutney, Ice cream, even the seeds are edible, a good starch roasted chestnut like snack I first encountered in Thailand, just biol and then roast with spices  if you want, but be warned to eating the seed, you will blow air below!

Today I want to share the July season Jack-fruit family member - The Marang, or Artocarpus Odertissimus that is indigenous to Palawan, Borneo and Mindenao.

I only eat this one fresh, it is akin to a creamy Banana, one could say milky, it has a hint of Dorian, not intense or overpowering, it is one fruit one to two people serving size - Once open you need to eat withing a hour at best. In the season I will (Share) consume about 40 of these, about 800 seeds will come of that. In the past we cooked the seeds, now I sell them  $5 for 10 seeds, it cover my fruit addition, and in turn allowing me to  share the fruit with the locals. You would be surprised how many locals have not tried the fruit as it is a income rather than a food source to be enjoyed -  The sad part is tourist buy seeds, and never plant them.

Well attached are some pics of my breakfast, a cup of Joe, with one ripe Marang, a true  bathroom special I call it. I like my fruit slightly chilled, and eaten once open. As for size, the coffee is a large mug, so you can see that the fruit is a very small version of a jack-fruit and its fruit is white and very tender when ripe.

If anyone knows dishes or other ways to use this fruit, I am all ears and taste buds!

Sure, will be doing a trek next week will have the Nikon at the ready. For all the faults here, the fruits and fruits of the sea make a great balance. I have a mountian tribe visit in a few days, they manage coffee with wild bearcat (civet)-  Should be fun.

Hi, is this elongated Badak fruit, it is a relative of the common Jackfruit, but Artocarpus champeden I think? I do know that some friends call it chempedak. The only place it grows in the Philippines is Palawan.   If so it grows here but not in demand as it is small where the Jack fruit is larger, economics here! Other fruit that people search is Red Durian, Dugyan and Wild Mangosteen, pale reddish/orange and not purple called Bunog, then we have Palau Saguit-Saguit, I use the local name as the botanical name is Wellughbei sarawacensis, a tounge twister for a Scotsman to say the least!

I will need to list and travel, part here are unexplored. Taking a few trips to the tribes and have a translator. I will be on and off, and you can follow. Need all the help possible, so questions are a great medium.

Was recommenced by a Phd from Ecotech. He explained - The objective of vacuum is to remove oxygen, in turn no chance to degrade as oxygen is the catalyst. I have had seeds in Vacuum packs for weeks at room temp, in the ref  for months, in the freezer for 2-3 years without a issue.

However I am open to any request for shipping, the client is King, or Queen.
Those seeds in the freezer should look nice in a herbarium as a show but should be death long time ago!  Maybe the refrigeratedones also,  remember is a ultra tropical plant,  please just send fresh seeds to anybody interested!

I only send fresh, not frozen or ref, I/We eat the fruit, I save the pulp for Sorbet, drinks etc. It is all of value, I only sell the seeds in season, 4-6 weeks no more until next year.

In that I have just  grown Chili (Peruvian whites, Trinidad Scorpions and Passion fruit from a Brazilian friend in Haiti two years ago, and I stored theses seeds in the freezer.

Again, I send fresh seeds, I do vacuum pack, but if you want a packing method you need, I will comply, the client is King or Queen. You need to remember the Air travel ranges in temp, hot to v.cold, the travel time, be it days or weeks will not damage a large seeds in a vacuum pack, less oxygen less chance of degrading.

Great looking canopy, here (philippines)they place in a concrete post and branch out some rsb, ugly as hell. I have planted 3 segments (cuttings) and plan a bamboo wall much like your nest in construction as I have iso containers for workshop space and it is a shame to waste the space, so I will be going vertical. A buddy of mine has some 200 mature fruiting plants. Still has not got around to selling the fruit though, so I get the my fill. FYI, frozen is the best way to eat them.

cempedak on Palawan, this is a small bersion of the jack fruit right? I use jack fruit for chutney and ice cream, love the stuff. The fruit you want is also dowth south, not that common, more wild as the yield is less for local traders vs the large jack fruit. Also we hust passed the season, so mey be hard to get fresh seed, but will try and get back with a result.

I love Mangosteen, it was my all time fruit of choice, then I was given this strange yellow/orange round vine fruit a couple of years ago. The person who gave it to me had no knowledge of the fruit apart from a area it is found.

Well to cut a long story short, it is Tabo, and is my new number 1 fruit. I get to have it around July - Aug each year and have the luck to have about 20-30 Kg of the stuff. Getting it is a trek, but well worth the effort -  On my 3rd Kg as we speak...

Since,  I have found that the seeds are wanted, and I can see why! However I have found very little information  on the fruit, some stuff on FAO, some limited blogs, some strange tales, but in truth nothing substantial.  I have grown a few plans/vines, seems to enjoy tangling with my  trees and likes reaching, no budding or flowers yet. I remember waiting for my Passion fruit, but this now 1 year, and unsure when as this is also a vine?

Well I sell the seed, what I have per year, I eat the fruit, no just eat but it makes a excellent sorbet. I enjoy having this unique addition and it is rare, but like anything, I would like to be educated.

If anyone out there has info, please share!

Regards,

Kevin
