I found great article about Ponderosa lemon history, it is in czech language.

So, here are some nice points. :
First time it appeared in spring catalog of Schmidt & Botley comp. in 1899. Under the name "American Wonder Lemon"
Here is their catalog from 1900.
Competitive company Good & Reese presented it under the name Ponderosa in their catalog in 1900.

They choosed the name Ponderosa lemon most likely from "ponderous Lemons".

A genetic study found it to be a hybrid between citron and pomelo.
