Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 2013 cherimoya taste testing results
« on: March 07, 2013, 12:28:41 PM »
Isabel said she needed to coordinate with the San Diego folks on the pruning date.
San Diego had their board meeting last night. I haven't heard anything from them yet.

Is there going to be another meeting for scion exchange?

Were you able to figure out what type of cherimoya budwood I gave you few weeks ago?
I am really curious to know what it is.

What type of branch would be suitable for rooting?  Last year's growth with the sappy tips removed and leaves intact?

Hey Adam,

Just curious to see if you ever rooted a cutting of your jaboticaba.  Could it be done?  if this could be done, how long would it take for the rooted cutting to fruit?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: wanted atemoya scions
« on: March 06, 2013, 01:06:32 PM »
FYI - JF dropped off some Cangrejos budwood for me along with African Pride. I have already distributed it to four folks. I am out for now.  When we meet at CRFG later this month, if JF brings more I will be happy to share with you folks. Thanks

Thanks for all your help Behl! I will prune the trees today or tomorrow and give the budwood to null zero(Stephen). This will be the last opportunity for everyone.

Thanks again

How do I obtain scions from Cangrejos' sugar apple?  I signed up for the wait list last year.
Anymore lisa atemoya available?

I am also looking for some guava scions now.  If anyone could help, please let me know.

Thanks.

I grafted these atemoyas (AP) ~3-4 weeks ago.  The scions are pushing and the largest bud is close to an inch.  The rubber band was starting to restrict the growth so I removed it.  Should I wrap the exposed part of the union with another layer of parafilm to prevent bacteria/fungi from getting in?

I did a couple of cleft and reverse saddle 3-4 weeks ago.  I noticed one or two of the grafts started to push through the parafilm yesterday after the heat from the last couple of days.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango grafts in March
« on: February 27, 2013, 11:24:13 AM »
I've performed some grafts on several mangos a few days ago. The rootstock is pushing new growth and the budwood is budding ...... does it have a chance to take if our morning lows still reach the mid 40's and 50's?? I've had success in April and May but never in the fall, summer and winter months. This the first time I've attended it going into March.

I have a guava grafted right before the So. Cal frost that took.  The guava tree was in the middle of my back yard with no frost protection. The lowest temperature was probably in the mid 20's. The temperature is warming up and it's pushing new growth.  I think you'll be OK.

Thanks to Rtreid(Richard) for his generosity, I got all the scion wood I need for the pluots, nectarines, and cherries.

I am still looking for some mulberry scions.

Hey Fang,

I have 2 dormant trees on the ground now.  One is about 5' the other is about 2'.
These are wild seedlings.  The variety is unknown.

Do you have a tree already or are you going to root the mulberry cuttings?

I am now looking for some scion wood for Persian or Pakistan mulberry too.  Please let me know if you have budwood to share.

Thanks.

Not sure if papaya tree nursery still have the turnbull variety.  He still have his 2011 list up.
Try giving him a call.  I spoke with Alex before and he is a pretty nice guy.  His trees are pricey though.

Xshen, the foothill one is closest to you in Arcadia. They had lots of apricots last weekend, and other stone fruits. That one meets only every 2 months though.
I'd imagine the LA and OC ones are far for you unless you work there or happen to go that way on the weekend.

I tried grafting apricot for the first time last weekend and the wood on the small twig of a scion was tougher than I imagined. Normally I do cherimoya, white sapote and soft things like that.

There was a scion exchange meet on Feb 2 that I just missed in the Arcadia chapter.

I did obtain a few royal apricot scions and grafted them right before the frost hit us.  The apricots are now coming out of dormacy and started to push through the parafilm.  So far, it looks like all four apricot grafts took.  I also did about 10+ cherry grafts.  They are also starting to push through the parafilm.  Stone fruits seem to take pretty easily.  I haven't had one that failed yet.  I also did a few atemoya grafts before the frost.  Some started to push and even had close to an inch of growth but they turned black and brittle after the frost.  I will try again in a few weeks.

You're in Glendora, CA?  I'm in Covina. The only remaining scion exchange I know of is West LA in Culver City. It's Saturday morning if you want to go see. I've seen some of your varieties at various exchanges over the last several weeks. But I'm somewhat anti stone fruits so I didn't take any.
I can take some if I see any there. But I REALLY don't know what's what for stone fruits.

I am not a member of the group but I would love to join.  Next Saturday is the begining of the new lunar calendar and we wont be able to attend.

I just snooped around their website and it looks like you guys are having a lot of fun at the meets.  Especially the grafting sessions.  If you plan on attending next Saturday's meet, I would greatly appreciate it if you can snatch a few scion woods for me.

Nice find.

Just in case if anyone is interested, the home depot at San Dimas has some bing cherry for ~$17.  ~5-6' bare root trees.  I really wanted to pick one up but there are too many birds in the area

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Grafted "chicken heart" Wampi
« on: January 12, 2013, 12:36:48 AM »
Does anyone know if wampi seeds come true from the parents?  Since it's related to citrus, I am hoping it does.  How long does it take for a seedling to produce?

My friend has a grafted chicken heart and I would like to plant some seedlings out of this.

Why not just set up an airlayer on your friends tree? Works easily on citrus so I would imagine it would work on these as well.

I thought about that but I was little hesitant to ask since I already did 5 air layers on his lychee tree last weekend.

Yes.  Thanks for correcting me.  It's Charly from Rowland Heights.

Charly's prices are very reasonable.  I got an African pride atemoya from him for $30 (instead of $35 since I bought a few things from him).  Ong's have similar size African prides for $75.

Just came back from Ong's and picked up a few trees.  3 atemoya Lisa, 1 atemoya Geffer, a Indonesian seedless guava and a Indian jujube.
There were a few other trees I wanted but cargo space was limited.

Indonesian seedless guava

Atemoya Lisa

Another Lisa for a friend

I gave the other trees to my parents and didn't get a chance to snap some photos first.
