Thought it was at least a day off, but was soft so tore into lone m. mangifera? (sp?)

Wow! Wonderful flavor. Sweet with some sour, complex and spicy. Juicy. Some fibers, but not a problem. This fruit is excellent. As good or better than m. laurina.

Just to be clear, this and m. laurina and mempalam were better in flavor than most available mango fruits in store.

Most annona seeds should sprout fine without covering in FL, depending on time of year and care.

Ilama and others may be exceptions.

978
So far, I would rate in order of favorite to least favorite:

1) m. laurina (little flavor bomb)

2) m. sp? mempalam (yummy juice)

3) m. pentandra (similar to mempalam, less intense)

4) m. zeylanica (similar to mempalam, less intense)

5) m. casturi (funky)

6) m. altissima (sweet and simple)

Limited sampling, and could vary considerably, this is my experience.

New one to try in a day or so, m. sp? mangifera?

I agree Future, potentially useful genetics in these little treats.

Tried m. altissima this morning. Small fruit with a little fiber, not bad. Sweet, not much complexity. Worth eating.

Not sure what the other one is.

m. pentandra

Pentandra was similar to mempalam. Some fiber, juicy, sweet/sour mix with some spice and complexity. Not as powerful flavor, but good. Another good juice source.

Add 2 more.

M. zeylanica
Tried a few days ago and difficult to recall the taste in detail. Similar to mempalam and pentandra, sweet with some complexity. Need to try more. Perhaps tallest of mango relatives.

M. laurina
small to medium sized. Not much fiber, not a ton of flesh. Flavor is very good. Sweet, good acid balance, with some complexity, citrus and resin. Fairly juicy, noted to be very juicy when all the way ripe. Probably my favorite of the 4 discussed so far in this thread, sweetest. Tree reportedly gets very tall.

Wonder how vigorous these will be grafted onto indica. Growing all seeds out.

Beautiful! Your home and garden look in harmony with the natural surroundings, and it will only get better. Would be fun wandering around trying to id everything.

Beautiful yard and nice collection! Lots of fun watching the video, looking forward to seeing more of your oasis.

Pickering sounds like a good option, and Edward is a very good mango. Don't know as much about growth habit of Edward, but solid mango and seems to produce well.

987
Me too, we all are.

Jak flowers look like little fruits. Male flowers form first, and on branches, females later from the trunk.

Question for Nate and others:

Is now a good time to graft from the last trees ordered?

Only have 1 WuSu alive from last order, and the green shoots are droopy and some have wilted and dried out. Seems the roots are not that healthy, and this plant continues to struggle. Wondering if it is a good idea to see if it will graft onto m. cerifeira now, or if I should wait.

989
I agree, sounds pretty hi tech without the need. Cool that you are thinking about finding the best way, just not needed with many plants.

Happy Anniversary Joe!!

Waiting on all those to ripen as well. The Julie from yesterday was probably a day overripened. Still, was able to appreciate much of it.

Maybe its because I know there aren't as many mangoes around this year; seems like everything tastes better. Able to appreciate different flavor profiles more, and definitely less picky.

991
Hello

You are probably seeing male flowers develop, then dry and drop.

992
Hello

When you say taste is similar to e. uniflora, does that mean it tastes like a really good Surinam cherry, or like the common ones that have the harsh aftertaste?

993
A very fond memory I have, devouring OS's poolside at a resort in Key Largo. Everyone was eating their fried food and sandwiches, but staring at the smiling caveman dripping mango juice all about. Heavenly.

Having said that, I've had an LZ or 2 that were simply astounding and more complex than OS.

So, I have an OS tree, an NDM with a large part that is OS, and a seedling LZ. Will probably add LZ grafts this summer.

994
Fruitwise, a perfect LZ beats a perfect OS, but not by much. Most LZ's I've had were not "perfect."

OS has less problems with disease, and is easier to manage.

Suruga is out of stock for now, but might be worth getting on wait list.

996
Suruga has awakened, but not seeing any flowers yet. Flowered last year, couldn't tell if it set or not, flower cores eventually dried up.

997
Here are 2 of the 3 seedlings from Nate:

Just repotted them. They are tough as nails, not like the bareroot trees from China. The other seedling is planted in ground next to Biqi. Not as pretty as the 2 in pots, but doing well enough.

Seems yangmei can do better in pots than I thought.

Update:

The mangifera species I've been posting about (mempalam) is not mangifera pentadra. Just received fruits of m. pentandra, and was told that mempalam is a yet to be named species. Will post pics and give review on m. pentandra shortly.

Here is the fruit, not yet ready for consumption:

WuSu has been wilty, and An Hai seems to have lost its buds and died off. Any idea what's going on here Simon?
