Mango flowers before xmas?!
« on: December 14, 2016, 08:48:09 PM »
First off, I'm new here so hey yall!!! I live in Hobe Sound FL and I grow a good handful of fruit of the tropics. Anyways I have one of my mangos the pickering flowering. I just got it 3 months ago and in December! Do I just take them off or let it be and see what happens. It's a healthy tree that was in a 3 gallon so any advice would be great thanks!

Hey there.

I was surprised myself to find all 3 of my trees flowering. They are all young as well.  My graham is flushing flowers and regular growth. Grahams a beast despite the claims of it being a condo mango lol

Don't cut them off, it will most likely just try and re-flower.  Let it do its thing.  In the event it sets any fruit, when/if the get eraser head to marble size, then pull the individual fruits off.

Otherwise. Let the flowers be, they will harden, tyrn black and die.  Once the spring flush time comes, any dead flowers can be cut off.  Be careful of breaking them off as you can cause damage to the terminal ends.

Thank you for the advise, bsbullie!
Similarly, my in-pot LemonZest mango is also trying to put out flower buds.

Thank you for the replys, nice mango tree! I have four mango trees (coconut cream, pickering, cogshall, and an unknown mango species that was on the property when I bought it). The unknown variety is super sweet and fiberless and is a large shaped almost like a ball. So besides the large tree I have flowering nothing has bloomed yet except now the pickering and even before the large tree.

I have a Maha Chanok, a Kesar, an Angie, a Pickering, a Lemon Zest, and a Fruit Punch. I was amazed to find yesterday that my new Lemon Zest has put out its first panicle. So far that's not the case for any of the others. The Maha has been in the ground over 2 years now and has not done anything. But there is still time yet in this season.

I was also thrilled to see flowers on my new Calamondin and Key Lime, and those should at least hold their fruit, so I'm looking forward to that! I also have some vegetables that are really happy at the moment, so that will keep me busy for a while.

I have a Kesar that is blooming like crazy right now.  I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one.

first post be gentle.

So, pretty much every tree in my yard is going nuts throwing out blooms like it's springtime, except for my stubborn Maha which hasn't budged since planting it in august ( full 7gl) . Pretty sure they are all going to die and cause me untold mental anguish. Thankfully my wife is very supportive of my obsession. We now have several trees in bloom.

These are in the ground, several more starting to bud in the pot.

Rob why would you pick the small fruit off . That is how you would get a early crop out of season. I ask because I have fruit on some trees now. I was going to leave it hoping for fruit in march or april. Should I pick the fruit off.

The mango blooms are moving north. My Pickering, Cogshall and MC are flowering. here in South Pinellas. The first two fruited this year; it will be the Maha's first. Other trees -- Mallika, NDM, Neelam, Angle, Fairchild, Providence and Honey Kiss show no signs yet.

Cause the original poster, who I was responding to, said his tree is in a 3 gal.  People need to stop letting 3 and 7 gal trees of any kind hold fruit.  Trees of that size need to be let to get some age and maturity to them vefore letting them try and hold any fruit.  Tbis is for reasons mainly of health of the tree and secondary would be the quality of the fruit on such a small tree would be very much compromised.

Is this a common occurrence for so many types of mangoes to be pushing flowers?

I have a Haden, Graham and Nam Doc all in ground, all pushing flowers... tho they are pretty close to each other in terms of when ripe fruit is due, it's still seems kinda early?

Nam Doc Mai, already has some sub-pea sized fruit, and my Lancetilla is shooting up flowers, this is in the Dominican Rep.  in Florida,  my Pickering and Valencia Pride trees, had nothing yet,  which might be a good thing, I think Florida will get some cold weather this year.

My Glenn (almost 1.5 years in ground, over 10 feet tall) is covered with bunches of flowers. We had really good fruit during the summer off this tree.
