Seeking consensus opinion: Best Early Mango
« on: June 18, 2013, 08:34:36 PM »
Hi all, I'm going to be planting an early tree for a friend.  I don't want my bias to cloud the choice.
(I've tasted most of the more common varieties)
Lets define "early" as fruit bearing from March-June.
Zone 10a coastal.
Thanks in advance for your replies...

I think you should define "best".  Many consider Edwards the best tasting early mango, but it is a shy bearer.  If productivity is a consideration, you should state that as a factor and perhaps consider Duncan or Springfels.

Dont have mangos growing myself, yet. From the ultomate mango list in the sticky the three that stick out to me are edward, carrie and po pyu kalay. Think ill plant this last.

"Best".
Combine taste, productivity, disease resistance, availability, etc.  There are no wrong answers..
Give me your opinion, your experiences with your trees.
I personally have Carrie, Florigon, PPK, Pickering, Cogshall and Glenn in early/mid mangoes.  Carrie is my earliest mango this year. Pickering dropped all of it's fruit (though it would have been earlier than Carrie).  Cogshall and Glenn are late this year.  Florigon and PPK blanked this year unfortunately.
My buddy has a Duncan already, his usually bears from late June through July here. I was looking to add an earlier mango, on average how early is Edward?
Any Rosigold fans out there?

The Po Pyu Kalay or Lemon merengue is a good looking tree and fruit, easily maintained for height. My friends ask for them every year. I probably had 20 fruits this year maybe an average producer.

No one here gets consistent March-April mangoes from a particular variety. Though Rosi-Gold  Rosigold is the earliest for some for some years meaning April. My earliest mango tree is Glenn which is reliable bearer. Some are tired of this tree which can be watery some years and this year was one of them.

A very good early-mid-late combo are>>>
  • Glenn  --- early
  • Nam Doc Mai   --mid
  • Gold Nugget aka Golden Nugget   ---late
  • This is ye old reliable threesome for an old timer in Miami who once had more trees but eliminated them as the years went by
  • ---

  • I would add Carrie to the above for unique taste
  • and possibly Fairchild for reliability
  • possibly rosigold for very early

In SoCal we have a different schedule. Here is a list of early mangos.
Our earlist mangos ripen in early August, unless you live in the coechella valley like our friend Gary, through September. Here is what I would consider early mangos in Orange County:

Edward
Haden
Glenn
Ataulfo
Irwin

Mid-October - November

Carrie
Pickering
Thomson
Malika
Manila
Peggy
Coconila

Late - November ?
Keitt
Lancetilla
Carnival
EM3

I'm evaluating LZ,Spirit of 76, Alfonso and NDM4 this summer and I have a feeling the first 2 are early and the last 2 Mid.

In my Temperature Zone 10b, the earliest is the Rosy-Gold. Because of its early season, this is a mango that I can't be without.

I'm leaning towards Rosigold or Edward myself.
My Glenn seems to be very precocious, I will have enough to trade for some of his Duncans..
Keep the ideas coming, I appreciate everyone's opinions!

I planted Angie as my early mango.  Haven't gotten any fruit from it so far, but those who've tasted it seem to have a very high opinion of it.  I am impressed how short and compact it's growing, which is always a big plus--better to have a mango bush than a 50-ft. tree!

Not the same. Ataulfo is much earlier.

The best mango for the coast of California is probably Rosigold, it doesn't seem to get much powdery mildew and ripens a lot earlier than the others. Glenn also has done good.

Not according to Gary. His Rosie ripens early but at the same time as many others.

I like to add to early ripening mangos:

Varecalle, Garvey and Bangkok mangos all SoCal criollo or corrientes(seedlings) from Orange County.

Hi Joe, How about Southern Blush.  Of my twelve varieties of mangos it was early this year after Rosigold and Maha Chanok. Then was Edward and Pickering.  I waited until these trees had quarter size fruit and then I removed the fruit (I want them to grow).

I dont grow Southern Blush and the mango, to me, is average. The mangos that stand out hmmmm....Bailey Marvel, Graham, Bombay, PPK, LZ,E4, alampur, cocnut cream...i forgot. Biggest disappointment Cushman, Choc Anon and Tebow.

Interesting that you didn't like the Cushman.  Most people do.  Hopefully I'll get to try it soon.  Do you think the PPK and LZ are different enough to grow both?  Or if you have one that is good enough?
