The 2014-2015 Florida all orange forecast released today by the USDA is 96.4 million boxes, down 5 percent from last month, and 8 percent down from last season’s final production. If realized, this harvest will be the smallest in 50 years.

Citrus the state's signature crop is fighting for its life against a bacterial disease with no cure. The estimate released Tuesday represents a decline of 60 percent since the peak of citrus production at 244 million boxes in 1997-98. In a year with no hurricanes, long freezes or other severe weather events, Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam says it shows what a death grip citrus greening has on Florida's orange groves.

This makes me paranoid about the trees I just installed in my own yard. I think my neighbors tree may be sick too. Im going to collect a sample and have it tested at my local extension office.

Growing citrus is now tough in Florida. I spoke with a grove owner recently and he said he only stays in business by foliar feeding every month and constantly planting new trees. I have finally removed all three citrus trees (Temple, Valencia, Navel) from my yard because that's just too much work for me. Last season my harvest was low and not very flavorful like it previously was.
