My neighbor who I gave the variegated sour orange to years ago, sold his house this spring. Before he moved I grabbed the last of the fruit from the tree. The resulting seedlings... As soon as they get a little size to them, I'll find a place in the yard to plant them. I no longer have access to the tree, the new owners are trash & will probably cut the tree down... Yeah I know, I should have taken budwood...

Too bad the new neighbors are that way. The seedlings already look the part. Wonder how these will turn out once the get some size on?
I tried to root some Yuzu cuttings before moving and that didn't turn out. Oh well.
Cheers, Barrie.

Here's a thought I don't remember ever being discussed. Would using these variegated sour oranges as rootstock impart it's variegated traits into the scion? As these are not just sports, but part of the plants dna... Would it help the scion at least produce variegated sports?
-
Not sure. My guess is that they would not give a variegated effect to the scion portion of the tree at all.

I have tried to cleft on varigated rootstock.....NO vari passed to grafts.

I think one of these will be a test for one of my Italian lemons in the future. Maybe Dr. Manners can chime in?

My seedlings started nicely variegated and grew green after 5th leaf. I see the bottom leaves are still variegated. Is it normal? Will they grow variegated leaves at all? I need to give them more attention.

If all new growth continues to lack variegation, forcing the buds on the stem in the region of variegation may produce new variegated branches. If the variegation is transient only, there may difficulty in recovering variegated tissue. There is some potential of the original stem exhibiting another segment of variegated stem and leaves if further growth continues without manipulation.

The mother tree produces variegated bud sports up & down the tree. Even the green branches produce variegated fruit.
