Tropical Fruit Discussion / M. Coronata Restinga Blooming
« on: December 07, 2016, 07:39:21 PM »
Just checked one of my m. coronata restinga trees this afternoon and discovered blooms. The tree in the photo is the one with the blooms. Maybe the others are blooming...I'll check tomorrow. This tree is small.....just over 4' tall. All 3 are in the ground and on bubblers that come on 4 times a week for 10 minutes. City water. No browning leaves on any of the trees due to water. This is one of the greatest jabs to grow. I started from seed in 2012.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Otto Anderson Scions
« on: December 04, 2016, 11:42:41 AM »
Selling some Otto Anderson scions. The diameter will be a little smaller than a pencil...more than likely smaller. I'm not an expert at this. I'll cut the scions and send the same day.

$10 each.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / M. Phitrantha 'Otto Anderson" Seeds
« on: November 13, 2016, 07:38:34 PM »
M.phitrantha 'Otto Anderson' seeds are ready to ship. They're about a week old. I don't have many (around 45 give or take) and they'll be $7.00 each plus shipping which is probably around $2.00 or so domestic.....more for International shipping.

Just to let you know the Otto Anderson seedlings are extremely hard for me to grow. The seeds sprout fine but most seedlings die off for me.

There is no guarantee on success with these seeds. The only guarantee is that the seeds are fresh.

A day or two and they'll be ready. Only 15 or so fruit on the tree now with tons of blooms coming.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Some Jabo Fruit
« on: October 29, 2016, 05:05:42 PM »
My Red and Otto Anderson (m. phitrantha) are fruiting with a ton of flowers coming on.

I know that members have asked for scions of Otto and I will soon get around to selling. Most of the scions will be small (1/8"+) and price will be $10 for these small scions on up in price for larger ones. Blooms almost constantly and the ones I have bloomed about a year after grafting. Now is a great time to graft.

Let me know if anyone is interested.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tropical Orchard Update

A couple of mistakes. The last papaya described is an Australian and not a Hawaiian and I called the caipirinha by the canal a restinga.

This just proves that the older I get the better I was!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pugged A Few
« on: August 22, 2016, 04:37:05 PM »
Pugged a few of my trees a month or so ago and thought I'd share their development with you. The mangos and lychee were anywhere from 11' to 15' high. Everything is now about 6' tall. I just don't like large mango or lychee trees....even a 15' tree is too large for me. Less fruit but easier harvest and since I don't sell that's not a big deal to me. I freeze 95% of my fruit.

Jaboticabas are a different story. I let them grow as tall as they want. The largest I have is around 14' tall. This p. otto anderson has skinny legs because it's a graft and what you see is the sabara rootstock. I cut off all of the sabra limbs. All of the vegetation is p. otto anderson. I have 3 of these.

The c. restinga in the photo is 6' tall. I think I have 5 of these.
At last count I think I had 34 large jaboticabas plus numerous small pots of them.

I also put about 50 pounds of sulfur around the jaboticabas yesterday.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Earliest/Latest Mango's
« on: August 19, 2016, 08:25:59 PM »
To complete my mango orchard I need the very earliest variety (ripening possibly in March) and the latest (possibly ripening in October.) I come up with Rosigold as the earliest and Neelam or Keitt as the latest.

Are these the best choices?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help With Mango ID
« on: July 28, 2016, 09:00:59 PM »
A friend gave me about 50 of these today. The 50' tree was in his yard when he bought the house a couple of years ago and nobody knows what type it is.

The fruits are large and heavy averaging about 7"x4" and around 1.12 pounds, give or take a few ounces. Deliciously sweet with no astringency and no fiber. The seeds are really flat....similar to Nam Doc Mai.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Ray

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bird Netting
« on: April 21, 2016, 09:31:10 PM »
Got my bird netting today and I'm hoping that'll be the end of these winged maurauders. Today I counted an endless amount of mockingbirds and a couple of woodpeckers...yep, red headed woodpeckers hopping all through my jaboticabas.

The netting looks very sturdy and is commercial quality. The seller bought thousands of feet from a vineyard in Washington state and if anyone's interested he still has thousands of feet left. And at a extremely good price. I have about 250'x18' and with shipping it only cost me $125.00. Shipping the large, heavy box from Washington state to Florida was about $75 so the netting was only $50. I contacted the seller and he'd be glad to ship it anywhere. His name is Doug and his number is 206-396-5379. I just talked to him and he told me to post this info for anyone who would like to buy.

This hybrid looks beat up because it was growing in my alkaline soil. It's now in a pot but hasn't put out much new growth yet.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Backyard Fruit Orchard Update
« on: March 16, 2016, 02:48:01 PM »
Here's another update on the progress of my fruit trees. Towards the end of the video I mistakenly called a dwarf mango and dwarf jackfruit. That's because the older I get the better I was...including my mind.
