WANT: West Indian Family Avocado Seeds
« on: May 30, 2016, 12:55:04 PM »
I am looking for avocado seeds that come from West Indian family (or hybrids thereof) avocados. Anything basically from Florida that has a big seed would be perfect. Waldin and Lula come to mind immediately.

I got a bunch of Lula seeds late last year. They are huge and they send out extremely vigorous shoots for grafting.  I shared a bunch of the seeds with friends. So I am looking for some more seeds to throw on top of my mound for some more in-situ grafting.

So if you are enjoying any avocados with nice big seeds, please save them!

I will pay for seeds + shipping. Thanks!

I don't know which grocery store  chains are in your area, but here at the end of June / beginning of July Slimcaddos become available in our grocery stores and have worked well for my grafting needs.

We almost always have Hass. I once found some Sir Prize, but that was a rare find. In Aug/Sept I can find Reeds (my favorite) at my Whole Foods. They have big seeds.

But if you can save some seeds from the slimcados, I would really appreciate it! I think that would work well!

I'll keep a look out.
I'll probably be able to get some brodgon in a month are so.
I can keep the seeds for you if you'd like.

Have always used Florida Slimcados which are either pure W.I. or a hybrid. Have worked out well.  That's what I'd recommend.

Chopped off a Brogdon from a Waldin rootstock and used the watersprouts to successfully graft 6 scions of Ardith, Holiday, Sir Prize and Pinkerton.  Here's a shot about 3 weeks ago. It's quite a bit bigger now and really sending off a flush of leaves even the lower branches.

Reed is finally producing well and is about 10' tall. It's holding last year's and this year's fruit set.  About lost Sharwil, Gwen and Oro Negro to some kind of canker, blight, lab couldn't isolate it.  Coming back with a treatment of Phyton 35.

While cleaning up my Reed today accidentally clipped off a branch holding one 19.2 oz mama from last year and 2 of this year's babes.

Oh no!! In about 2-3 months that would have been perfect! :( (assuming yours ripen at the same time the CA ones do).

"They say" that this pure Guat needs 16-18 mos. of hang time. It was 14 mos., will update.  If it takes 2 weeks to ripen and shrivels......  :(

West Indian seeds are large (vigorous) and they handle salt much better than Guat or Mex, which is a problem around here. They don't handle cold, but since I am using them for rootstocks, that is not as much of a concern.

Not so sure now. Found one on the ground the other day and was not rock hard either.  I may be getting close.

Anyone know where you can get West Indian avocados in the San Diego area?  Someone from San Diego asked where they could get salt-tolerant rootstock but I wasn't sure what markets in San Diego carry them.
