My startfruit are the only ones having yellow leaves. This year, I did change my watering to a lot more (daily/two days, 15 minutes => daily 4x 15 minutes); it seems to have a much better effect on almost all of the plants, resulting in new leaves/fruits or having more fruits this year;

I planted these two starfruit this year (7 gallon Kari, 7 gallon Sri Kembangan); I read online that they love acid soil and may just need some soil acidifier, and the watering is just fine (since they are tropical, as you can tell from the pictures are growing many new leaves at the tips); It might be better having more "yellow" leaves, than fewer leaves (or browning ones) by not watering as much?;

Can someone please advise? Thank you;

Kari

Can you recommend from the following:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / sapodilla not leafing
« on: March 07, 2016, 10:41:21 AM »
My Haysa is not leafing out since winter.. However, my Alano still has most of its leaves.. Is it too early to start leafing? This is the only tree doing nothing now.. It's like it is still "frozen" from the wintertime.. others are leafing or blooming or fruiting.. It still has a bunch of leaves on one little side, and most of the branches are green (even can tell from the outside)..

Can anyone help? Thanks.

Alano (2nd year in ground)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / avocado variety?
« on: December 17, 2015, 12:04:39 PM »
Hi,

I am interested in getting an avocado tree; which variety is good? Thanks. I have a small 3g Reed Avocado growing and would like to get another one; My 3 year old son actually loves to eat avocados, so I might as well grow another one; (Please don't remove this thread like the other one about "jackfruit", what happened to that one?) I am looking at an Oro Negro or Brogdon? I saw some other varieties like Nishikawa, Day, Hall, Choquette, Wurtz, Jose Antonio..

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / dragon fruit leaf curl
« on: November 03, 2015, 06:24:38 PM »
Hi,

One of my dragon fruits leaves are curling.. We had high temps of over 100s last month (October).. maybe this is why? My other ones are doing well and don't show any signs of curling.. Also, this one is under full sun (while the others have partial shade half the day).. maybe that's why too? Can anyone tell me? Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Black Sapote has yellow "ribs" on leaves
« on: June 03, 2015, 10:17:32 AM »
My black sapote (just planted, 3 gallon); The middle of the leaves are yellow (sort of like the "ribs" part, I know I'm not saying it right); It was in a pot for about three weeks or so, and when I transplanted it, the roots were black and looked very wet; I might have been overwatering it too much (next to my dragon fruit plants, so I just spray everything with water); Is this a problem of overwatering or nutrition deficiency? Thanks;

Tropical Fruit Discussion / White Sapote
« on: June 02, 2015, 06:32:49 PM »
I bought a Suebelle White Sapote from Lowes last year (about 3ft tall, $34.95 I think) and this year, there were already flowers and even fruit coming out ... the ratio doesn't seem to good though.. like 10-15 flowers bundled together, then only one or two fruits.. but I can't complain, since it wasn't expected.. now it's about 6 ft tall, but in a "V" shape.. is this correct? I see pictures from other people that it's supposedly grow like a straight "T" shape.. if you click on the picture (and click again to zoom in) in the middle of the "V" shape, you can see a group of flowers that are coming out.. the other ones and the tiny fruit are on both sides of the "V" (can't tell from the picture)

haha, Adam, I just got back to work yesterday.. 2 weeks time off for that baby girl  ;D sorry, I didn't get the custard apple scion to you in time, but lucky you got it from someone else..  :D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dynagro vs Humic Acid/Azomite
« on: May 04, 2015, 04:35:45 PM »
Which is better? Dynagro 7-9-5 or Humic Acid/Azomite?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMpQUsQcJFg

Humic Acid - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00912FRO2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1I0HX534SI4W3
Azomite - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HCMASRE/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1I0HX534SI4W3

It seems you can't really mix the two together.. the humic acid/azomite helps the soil break down and easier to uptake the macronutrients, like NPK... but if you add chemical fertilizers, the humic acid/azomite combo won't work as well?

Thanks for any explanation.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mamey Sapote & Recommendations
« on: April 02, 2015, 06:41:41 PM »
which of these is the better cultivar? I am able to buy the Veijo, Pace, or Papa, but I only want to try one. Thanks.

What other things would I be able to grow here? Currrently I have Surniam Cherry (Red), Cherimoyas/Atemoyas/Rollinia, Longan, Grapefruit, two oranges, two apples, two peaches, mangos, apricot, guava, white sapote, sapodilla, plum, pomegranate, cherries, muscadines, buddha's hand, kaffir lime, lemon, currants, loquat and ice cream bean - more than half already have fruits (fruiting or flowering) this year.. what I'm adding is replacement for the Coconut Cream/Lemon Zest mangos, kari starfruit, sweetheart lychee, a jaboticaba (sabara I believe) and a thousand fingers banana.. so these are the new ones that will be coming after we have our 2nd baby next month.. I heard that "star apple" is good to try too.. any other recommendations please? Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / longan flowers?
« on: March 23, 2015, 09:33:30 AM »
Hi,

I have been growing a seedling about 4 years ago (knee high) that I bought from a "trade festival". I didn't know anything about plants at that time, and they were selling three seedlings for $30 (thai guava, longan, and mango). So we bought it just for fun and now the longan seedling has become very big. This year, it started to have flowers? Can anyone verify for me? I want to buy another longan variety to have quicker fruit.. which variety is the best one to buy? I have read varieties like biew kiew, kohala, and sr champoo? Thanks.

Tree

Flowers?.. each of the tips have "flowers" like these.. I had some last year though, and it seems to be all vegetative growth at that time..

Sorry, I know this doesn't belong.. but hopefully just a quick answer would be nice.. How would I view this on Android/Iphone? For other forums, I use Tapatalk and their own apps (like XDA app for android).. is there a way to view this forum using an app such as Tapatalk or even as a RSS reader? Thank you.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Canker Disease or Gumminess?
« on: February 23, 2015, 11:34:19 AM »
Hello,

My father is growing a "umi" tree (japanese plum) I believe.. However, the trunk is having all kinds of vertical "cuts" on it.. He says there is sap coming out of the tree at the "cut" areas.. Can somehow tell me how to make the tree better? I did some research online and it could be canker or gumminess?

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Abiu Fruit Request + Pictures of Fruit Trees
« on: December 16, 2014, 04:50:47 PM »
Hi,

Does anyone have any abiu fruit available to ship to CA? I don't mind if they come in not in the best shape.. just something for my wife to taste  ;D I would very much like to taste one, but at least she can try first.. I told her since I can't take her to see the world now, but at least I can grow the world's fruits for her to eat (her mom just found out she has ovarian cancer last July; and her dad just had a second stroke just a few days ago) since I help send money to help her family out; She was also just recently in the hospital herself with our second kid (looks like a girl); I guess the baby was on her bladder and she couldn't pee for a few days since it was the Thanksgiving night and was hurting and couldn't walk, so we were stuck until Monday.. the ER doctors thought it was something else and didn't relieve her of the pain; On Monday,we went to the OBGYN and she said that her bladder was too full (2400cc) and if something wasn't done immediately, she could die; She had to get cathetered and stay that way for a whole week so her kidneys could rest (so I had to take a week off too); sorry.. I guess there's too much details for a site that's not related;

Basically, I never touched the garden stuff until I met her and for the past few years I have been growing all kinds of stuff and hoping that they will fruit so she can have a taste.. I have been learning my stuff from this forum and others; I told her that there are only two ways I will stop growing fruit: 1) either when I am gone or 2) she is gone; I have been on the forums and looking but it has been hard to find some fruit; I tried about 4 or 5 times with an abiu (have two growing tiny leaves now with a lot of fertilizer added - dr organics 9, dynagro and a few others), but it hasn't seem to take off; I guess it's because I'm in Southern CA, so it's near to impossible to grow; any other fruits you have that I'm not growing would be great too; I want her to have the very best in life that I can provide for her  ::) Whatever you can throw in the box and still come out partly edible here would be great; Just tell me the cost of fruit and shipping and I can pay (within reason, of course); Thanks for listening;

Here's what I have growing at the moment (the unknowns I just put the general name since I don't know); nothing special compared to some of you guys; typical back yard (10,000+ sq ft with mostly slope, so I do a layered terrace; so far 3 rows of trees and a half (that's the guava on the top right); can you guys tell me what I'm missing that's good? My parents are growing persimmons, so that's out of the list =) The orange boxes on the left are for 'vegetables'; We have been growing some different kinds (lettuce, cabbage, peas, asian leafy stuff);

Tropical Fruit Discussion / which ice cream bean is the best?
« on: October 30, 2014, 10:55:23 AM »
Hi guys, I'm starting to grow a ice cream bean tree that I got about a month ago (October 6, and the picture is October 26) that's about 5 ft tall.. not many leaves, but starting to sprout some more.. the cool thing is it seems to be growing every day.. there's always something new coming out somewhere on the tree.. It is the regular 'inga edulus".. I saw some people selling on ebay a variety called "Inga feuilleei".. and saying that it is more cold tolerant and has bigger pods too? Are there any other varieties that are any good? Anyone also have any for sale that I can purchase? Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pruning Cherimoyas/Atemoyas
« on: October 01, 2014, 01:43:54 PM »
Hi guys, what's a good number of leaves to hold for a branch before I prune or tip it? Or maybe they are just too small and let them grow more? I count about 10-15 leaves on some branches, while other branches have less than 10.. is it better to have an even number of leaves on the branches? Here's a picture of a few of mine.. Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / please tell me type of avocado, thanks
« on: September 29, 2014, 10:09:52 AM »
Hi, I was near San Diego and bought one from a farmers market.. it is much larger than normal avocados in the supermarket.. It seems to have a thin peel and a big seed too.. Can anyone help me see what kind of avocado it is? I got two seeds, but I wasn't sure if they had put the fruit in the freezer or not.. I will try growing it.. Do you think it will still sprout? Thanks.
