List of fruit growing on perennial vines
« on: July 14, 2014, 06:34:49 AM »
I looked on the forum for a list of fruit that grows on perennial vines, but couldn't find any list.

I am interested in such fruit, because they produce fruit much quicker than trees.

The fruit I can think of so far that I know of is:

-  Gac fruit
-  Monk fruit
-  Passion fruit
-  Oyster nut (couldn't find any so far from my contacts in Mozambique - I think it is out of season)
-  Cassabanana

Can anybody think of any more?  I will appreciate it if someone can help.

Hahaha.  We were discussing this same thing this morning at breakfast if I should include dragon fruit on the list or not - if it will be seen as a vine.  Thanks, now I know for sure.

luffa is a vine that is used more like a vegetable, but botanically speaking, it makes fruits.  It is at the fruit and spice park along the railing as you enter into the park.  Fruits are dried to make sponges, but can also be eaten when smaller and more tender.

There is a temperate vine hardy to -8C that um really interested in. It's called boquila trifoliolata the chameleon vine as it copies the leaves of whatever tree it grows on. Pretty white berries needs up to 80% shade and wet marshy conditions. Very tastey apparently and from Chile where I have fond rugby school tour memories:)

I also think there are alot of fruiting liana. Some genus I know are rich in edible species Uvaria and Artabotrys sp

Some other interesting vine fruits
Saba comorensis
Kadsura coccinea
Vanilla orchid
Kiwi fruit
Schisandra chinensis

I'm very interested in liana and vining fruit! Hope to see this thread progress it's so hard to Google and find new vine fruit cauz it is dominated by passion fruit info! Searching liana yields slightly better results but often just a pic with a common name if you are lucky!
Nothing worse than seeing a fruit that's extraordinary and tastey description with only a common name and no way to find the latin:(

We did this...http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=6254.0

Thanks for the link.  Looks like if you don't use the exact words of the subject of previous postings in your search, you won't find the info that is already on the forum.

Maybe have a moderator merge the two threads?

Hi Nicky
Sorry I saw your post only now.  Do you refer to braambos?  My husband always tells me about the thorns.  Unfortunately I don't know what it is in English.
