Air Layering with Water
« on: November 30, 2019, 06:33:44 PM »
I recently found some videos about air layering with water instead of soil. It is very simple, but should be very effective. Here are some vids:

Has anyone tried it?

I haven't tried it, but can't imagine it being more effective than soil, as there isn't air for gaseous exchange.

Interesting videos Felipe. I wonder if anyone has tried this on Avocado or other tropical fruits.
I have tried  to do clones in Avocado with regular air layering with out success.

It’s my observation that plants make roots that are adapted to the medium they are growing into.  Rooting into water is impressive but that those roots can be different, especially more brittle, than the roots in a soil medium.
We usually use coco fiber as a rooting medium for air layers.  I like to mix in about 10% potting soil in with the coco fiber, figuring that the eventual establishment in soil will be easier.

Hi ,

Slightly off topic, Avocado AL not with water but with coco coir in ziplock.
My first attempt.

Base: Zutano
Medium: Coco coir with Honey as Root Hormone
Date layered: 8/11/19
Date harvested: 11/25/19

I need to go back to drawing board. I'm going to try cuttings in  in soil in a piece of Aloe Vera and then bag the cuttings to keep humid.

Chris seems that you did the air layer in a green mature branch?

Carlos,

The plant is about 2-3 years old, long stem. Thats the reason i opted to try AL. I did three AL one each on Zutano, Mexicola and Wurtz about same dates. Waiting for warmer temperatures before checking for roots for the rest. So far no apparent roots formed yet. I noticed it has been very slow process.
Used honey as medium because someone on the forum championed its use. I was lucky.

Hope this helps

Some certain plants like black berries likey to work well for water air layering.

Would you still call it air layering?

I have rooted in water but haven't done airlayers with water

Carlos, I believe clonal Rootstock avocados are essentially airlayers. There is seedling Rootstock with the clonal variety like toro canyon grafted on top, then the grafted clonal portion is air layered to induce roots (I think for avocados this takes several months in the dark) then finally you graft your desired cultivar is onto the clonal graft that now has roots. The initial seedling Rootstock is cut off. You start off with 3 different plants and end up with the traditional 2.

Im interested in trying some of my own clonal rootstock down the road for avocado, i see some videos tieing bags of soil on avo limbs and it can work but seems to take very long time, i can have grafts take in under a month for avo, but of coarse im not counting the 6 months or more its taking me to grow the seedling rootstock large enough to take the graft.

Adding to my previous post. Here is a second set of AL Zutano under similar conditions.
AL 8/12/19. Harvested 12/11/19. Honey as root hormone.

Seems to confirm that this is reproducible (at least for Zutano) ?

Looks good, I heard Zutano and all Mexicans do AL better than other 2 races. I need to try it again.  Did you used only honey?

Yes, Carlos. i only used Honey.
I also checked on the Mexicola, roots did not form yet but bulging with white nodes (?). I rewrapped in coir and will recheck in another month or two.

There is "layering', and there is "air-layering."  Now perhaps, water-layering?

Traditional layering occurs in nature, and it has been used for thousands of years to propagate figs.  A shallow trench is dug below a low branch, which is bent down into the trench, weighted with rocks or logs, and soil, and the outer leafy tip of the branch is left uncovered, sticking up.  Several months later, the part of the branch near the tree is cut loose, the weights are removed, and the now-well-rooted branch is dug up and moved to a new place.
