Tropical Fruit Discussion / Garcinia prainiana graft compatibility
« on: December 07, 2016, 04:49:58 PM »
Has anyone grafted Button Mangosteen onto anything but itself? Would it work on something like G. xanthochymus, G. hombroniana or G. mangostana? This seems like a very under utilized fruit that could be easily protected.

TDS is on the high side with a lot of calcium. Besides that looks good. Adding sulfur like cookie monster said seems to be the way to go.

I use to do groundwater testing, would use TDS, pH, D.O., and conductivity sensors testing many wells in SoCal. From what I recall not many had tds over 300 and most had pH around 6.5 to 7.5

What can I do about the TDS? Would it be mostly calcium carbonate coming from the aquifer? Calcium carbonate is limestone right? If I acidify it with sulfuric acid what does nutrients or off gasses would I create?

It could be easier to just chuck some Tiger 90 sulfur on the ground once a year. From memory, 1 part sulfur will convert something like 3 parts calcium carbonate into gypsum. So, 50 pounds of Tiger 90 would eat up over 100 pounds of calcium carbonate.

I have been using quite a bit of sulfur and digging it into the ground as I amend the soil. I have a lot of potted plants here and I am trying to start a small boutique nursery so I think the acidified water will work better to keep those happy.

I normally just wiz on the coconut palms or the banana circle if I have to go when I am working. I am currently in the process of taking all of my trees out, ripping up the irragation, and using an auger to bust up the compressed drained swamp land while adding pelletized sulfur, perlite, and a ton of biochar as well as a 3' deep root barrier around my property. Basically building a large area of acidic potting mix. I have been recording the process so far so hopefully I will have some sort of youtube series that will show the progress. I will be replacing almost all of the trees with my own grafted trees that I have been growing with custom soil mixes and rootmaker root pruning pots from seed and planting them on giant mounds.

My theories on soil health and fertilization are that I want a pH of 5.5 - 6.2, good drainage with plenty of oxygen in the soil, high amount of diverse soil biology including inoculation of mycorrhizae on tree roots and what I think is most important is having a well developed root system that has never been rootbound. I am saving up for large rain barrel tanks and when those run dry I will pump well water in and acidify it with sulfuric acid. I will have plenty of chop and drop trees and shrubs around to have an ever expanding and contracting rootzone with fresh, orgainic, highly mineralized mulch being continuously added. I like to think of it as a breathing system of nutrient and organic matter decomposition and reabsorbtion.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Well water test results
« on: December 07, 2016, 03:34:43 PM »
Here are my test results from Ward Lab on my well water. I am in north Sarasota just east of I-75. I was told by my father that he paid for an extra deep well but beyond that I don't have any more information on it.

I am planning on acidifying the well water with sulfuric acid when I run out of rain water.

If anyone has experience reading text results feel free to chime in. I figured this could help out some other people around me that may have similar ground water.

From what I can tell the salt levels are very low and the pH is pretty high. If there is anything alarming on here please let me know.

I use a very wide range of organic fertilizers of all sorts. There is no way to tell what did what in my yard. Sul-po-mag, potassium sulfate, bone meal, Mighty Grow, greensand, azomite, crab meal, raw milk, aerated worm tea, mulch, cover crops, mycorrhizae inoculants, hugs and kisses, urine........

I didn't have any negative effects shortly after use. It seemed like a quality product. I think they use a better process than the cheaper fish I picked up from the wholesaler. I researched it a while back but I can't remember the specifics.

I went through a 5 gallon bucket. It is less smelly than the stuff I get from the wholesale supplier. Nothing but positive results here.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Canistel vs. Lucuma

Ross is the boss. Bruce is large but it is SUPER dry. I remember liking Fairchild 2 and picked up a tree to propagate, but I don't remember exactly what it was like. Most people around me have Trompo and that is the most common one at the nurseries here. The Ross sapote I have eaten a ton of fruit from was grafted and I think it was from the original Whitman tree, but I am not positive on that.  I had a different Ross that wasn't quite as good but still better than some of the named canistels I have tried. Still waiting to try Lucama but I keep hearing that is isn't as good as canistel. I did see it being sold in a powder form at Whole Foods as a "super food."

Sorry, I guess this post is off topic because I have never tried Lucama and I would like to know if anyone has fruited it in Florida. I have only seen a couple small seedling trees in person.

Hey guys. Fruitscapes Nursery on Pine Island have been busy propagating this. They had a bunch of nice 3 gallons available when I was there on Saturday. Steve is now calling it Pine Island Gold. I will forever be calling it Red's Dumpster and will be adding to some multi graft star fruit trees.

Beautiful cuttings and fast shipping. Excellent seller! Thanks again.

Please ask about a junglesop taste report and see if they have anything to they would like to share about it. It is such an enigma from all of my internet research. I would also be very thankful for a video link of this.

From my experience avocados don't really like being in pots. When was the last time it was potted up? Root pruning pots are great. I would pull it out of the pot and take a look.

They thrive in ground with extra large mounds and heavy heavy mulch.

Get them into potting mix. They grow fast.

Thank you so much for getting back to me. I will have to hunt some fruit pods.

I don't know how far north you are going but Dave Wilson Nursery makes some incredible videos for growers. They do a lot of business with Zaiger Genetics which are responsible for most of the interspecific stone fruit crosses. They might be good to contact and explain your youtube channel. I'm not sure what would be in season right now but Dave Wilson might have some weird pomegranates or apples.

Tropic Fruit in San Jose had fresh unfrozen durian when I was there as well as a bunch of other stuff. Stay away from the mangosteen. No bueno.

There was another Asian fruit store a few doors down that had some different dried stuff as well.

Love the series. I have watched at least 85% of them.

UC in Riverside did a bunch of genetic testing on dragon fruit and have a test planting. I'm not sure on the season out there but I have fruit on mine here.

Lots of backyard annonas, especially from people on this forum. :)

I didn't realize they still shipped. They had a ton of things I wanted. From what I remembered someone died over there and they quit mailorder. I would LOVE to get cupuassu. The stuff I had shipped in didn't make it. I would like to get fruit if possible. Maybe from Hawaii to Florida?

I've been getting some really good shopping done and I just set up a huge real estate buy in Zimbabwe. It turns out I am getting a HUGE settlement from the prince. I'll see you suckers later.

Nothing but Cialis landscapes as far as the eye can see for you, huh?

Ya mon. Best fertilizer around. Jizz and sweat that is. The trees don't get the direct dosage of Cialis.

Hey JF. I am really interested if you Maprang and odorata are still growing on your Ataulfo rootstock. All of my Maprang seedlings seem to have really weak root systems compared to mango. I would like to give them a boost.

Never mind, I see you want to keep it as a potted plant. Just cut it just above where you want it to start branching. You may want to wait for it to warm up or put it in a larger pot so it wants to push new growth.
