2. Malika (how this is not in most people's top 5 is beyond me)

-Jon

Jon, I cannot agree more with you —it really blows my mind. This year my 7' X 6' tree produced 40 delicious and perfect fruits. The tree stays small, super healthy, super productive and the fruits stay spotless until the day you pick them. My wife says that eating a Mallika is like eating mango ice cream. Really, there is nothing wrong with this variety.

3. Barracuda mango (Nam Dok Mai): I love its sweet taste.  They can be identified by the uniquely pale yellow skin and long slender candlelight shape.  I love eating it when fully ripen and best consumed with sweentened sticky rice, thicken coconut milk and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.  It is one of the most popular deserts in Thailand.

These NDM mangoes in the photo look the same as the Vietnamese CAT CHU with pale yellow skin characteristic. I have neither of them so could someone confirm how much difference between them?

First time I sampled Mallika, it was bordering on terrible. had this off taste,   couple years later sampled one that fell on the ground at Fruit and Spice park, and it was very good.  I later purchased a few from Chris, on the green side, put them in a paper bag in the garage, and they were the best mangoes I sampled that year.

I think these taste better picked mature green, and allowed to ripen in a warm location.  give them another try.

I couldn't decide on 5-6 trees.
Started out last yr picking what was available in the home centers with vague advice from no forum posts online (wasn't a member then) Alphonso, Mallika, and Valencia Pride. The Valencia fruited this yr- 2 only
Racoon got 1 the other I will get!- keeping it on the tree a few ore days.
Then I found this forum and a few good local nurseries and tree sales... Due to research here and polling friends
I'm Looking forward to These:
Venus - size and flavor and supposed to be late season
Coconut cream -because it's so recommended -love coconut and didn't know about sugar loaf first!
Sweet Tart_  sounds great and I like mangos that have a tart bite with the sweetness
Lemon zest_ because of the complexity of taste as well
Orange Sherbert_ because I thought I might be missing a good one
Pineapple Pleasure_ figuring a little pineapple  together with the coconut cream makes 4 a pina colada

Not that I'm not exited about the rest, I definitely am but these were my must haves even if space is getting tight .
The others in ground or ready to plant include:
Cotton Candy, Ice Cream, Fruit Punch, Peach Cobbler
Cac, kent,buttercream,
nam doc mai ( which I tasted locally after planting and it was just ok)

there are too many choices! I'm out of room.. want to buy the adjoining lot!

I have a Mallika tree and have been trying for years... Ripen in a bag, ripen in the garage, ripen on the tree. Never any good! It tastes more like a vegetable than a mango! It's getting topworked...I don't keep spitters in the yard.

Re: Mallika.  When I had a tree in Coconut Creek, I really liked the fruit.  Here in Deerfield Beach, I didn't and got rid of the tree.  So probably depends on where it's grown.  Also, I believe I heard Chris and Har say on one of her mango-tasting videos that she has always let Mallika ripen on the tree without any issues.

Ok count me in. I will include lemon zest and orange sherbet based on reflected esteem as I have never tries them. The 4 others would be:
- sam ru du
-Maha Chanok
-NDM
- Hong kong giant/gold
Honourable mentions to Rabaul, okrung and KP is just too common to grow one.

Just for a little spics I might add a dirty dozen, or maybe just a filthy five of a few that take mediocre or over-exposure to new heights. I don't want to leave anyone with a bad after-taste.

Can you describe the flavor of sam ru du?

That is a really good question. I will try to find out just out of curiosity. So far all i know is to send budwood you would need a phytosanitary certificate. I don't think there is enough profit to make it worth anyone's time. I am not sure how you would get the one's with polyembryonic seeds
