Maha Chanok nursery container size
« on: October 08, 2018, 09:58:59 PM »
Hello,

I'm looking to drive down to South Florida next month and would like to pick up a Maha Chanok tree. I was wondering what the minimum size would be for a tree fully capable of bearing from the nursery?  I plan of keeping the tree in a container for at least a year or two while I work out a more permanent place for it, as in moving to a new property.

Maha Chanok is not precocious. I think a 7 gallon tree would be too young to bear fruit. A 15 gallon would be ideal.

Since you have a year or 2, why not buy the 3 gallon size tree? It's cheaper and easier to drive with. If I were you, just get those 55 gallon drum, cut in half (make it a 25 gallon pot), drill some holes at the bottom, and create loop handle on both side using very thick paracord. Put the 3 gallon size tree into the half drum and grow it for next two years then you can put in ground.

Depends on the tree (air layer, grafted etc), I put my 3 gallon size Maha tree into the ground mid last year, this spring it has flowers and tiny fruit, I had to pinch the fruit off so that the energy goes to create more bush.

If you are moving it around you might try acquiring a dolly to move it around, even indoors for frost protection.

Or just remove the top part from the barrel, put it back at the bottom , and attached casters

Like I did for this Lamb Hass avocado tree
