hikoku, Tiliacora triandra is the yanang leaf of loas and isaan and is used mostly in bamboo curries and several other recipes. Most plants cannot be used for jelly and it is not a true jelly plant. The Mesona is a true jelly plant rather like a mint. The other you should seek is the green grass jelly vine Cyclea barbata which many say is the best jelly plant.

Great thread. I'm looking for jelly plants too. So far I only have konjac. I'll look for these species.

I only see the powder sold in markets with Vietnamese instructions.

Thanks Hikoku & Mike.  I wasn't familiar with these plants but they sound like a good addition -- sounds like you could make some really interesting fruit gels with them.  I would be interested as well if anyone has a source.

I have the Tiliacora triandra of the standard yanang type that is not used for grass jelly.I also have a Cyclea barbata vine climbing on my fence.Neither have produced seeds yet but have flowered a few times. With Cyclea you boil the leaves and leave the jelly to set.It is popular in some asian desserts especially when mixed with coconut milk and juices.

I will let you know if my ones set seeds from the flowers.Mesona should be easy to get from Taiwan and Sthn China. It is sometimes called black grass jelly. If you get the Tiliacora make sure it is in fact the variety which allows jelly to be made from the leaves rather than the common type that does not.

There's also the creeping jelly fig in Taiwan that people immerse the seeds in water and jelly can be strained out using a cheesecloth. One kind works with cold water, the more common one requires boiling. It's called aiyu jelly.

I just want to post this again in case anyone can find a source for the seeds.

Does anyone know for sure if a fig wasp is required for pollination for the F. pumila?  One source I looked at said it was required but I think that may have been Wikipedia (which always should be checked against a reputable source).

Thanks,
John

I think this is the one that will work without cooking. It's sold in Taiwan as packages of dried seeds. The jelly forms when the seeds are rehydrated. My Taiwanese friend wasn't able to find it so maybe it's not very common in stores.

I'm interested in seeds and branches too. I'll have to see if there are rules about importing branches to California.

I just bought a pot of green jelly vine without its scientific name listed. They said it was for the Vietnamese sương sām. Supposedly there are 2 kinds to make the green jelly: furry/hairy/fuzzy leaves and the smooth leaves. The fuzzy leaves are thought to be better quality because the jelly is more chewy and doesn't leak water. I got the smooth leaf kind because they didn't carry the other. I'm working on obtaining the fuzzy kind from friends/family, but no luck so far.

Hikoku, when my smooth leaf plant have seeds, I'd love to do an exchange with you for the mesona chinensis...if we can figure out a way to send it to CA like fyliu said. Perhaps you can send the seeds then we can try to germinate it that way.

For others in SoCal, Sunshine nursery (LA) and La Thieu Nursery (OC) carry them for $15/pot.

Hello I am a new member to this site. I was looking for Ficus pumila var. awkeotsang to make Aiyu jelly dessert. Does anyone have this vine or know where to get a plant in the San Francisco bay area/Oakland. I would be happy to trade with anything I have that might be of interest to you (cuttings).

I read you were all discussing about other Jelly vines that you have. Does anyone have some cuttings they can spare? I'd love to try my hand at growing some of them.

Some things i have are:
Passiflora edulis- edible passion fruit/dark purple skin, orange flesh
Loquat (Golden Nugget)
White Sapote (Reinekie/commercial)
Paw Paw (unknown variety-very slow growing)
white fig
Chicago hardy fig
Brunsfelsia Nitidia
Osmanthus (Fudingzhu)- White flowers
Osmanthus Tthunbergii -orange  flowers
Double Delight Rose -  (intense fragrance, white and reddish pink dual toned rose)
Pope John Paul White rose (intense frangrance)
Pure Perfume Rose (more like a shrub rose, fragrant)
Just Joey Rose (light pinkish/salmon color, fragrant)
ChangShou (Fukushu) Kumquat - large kumquats (golf ball sized) with dimple at base, tart flesh.
Akebia quinata,- Chocolate vine
Holboellia coriacea 'Cathedral Gem'
Holboellia latifolia
Beautiful Lychee
nazemetz pineapple guava
Rose apple - Syzygium jambos
Curry leaf tree
Persian Lime (used for sore throat by Persians, tastes like a non acidic orange, juicy, not too sweet)
Avocado (not sure if its Mexicola grande or Stuart)
Michelia alba (White Flowers)
Michelia champaca (yellow flowers)
Dragon Fruit vine: Red, Pink, white varieites.
Finger Lime (green/yellow flesh variety)
UFO Peach tree
Toona Sinensis tree-Chinese mahogany

Argh, dragonfruits are so heavy. I'll PM you what I have. I had a couple dozen at one point and then moved on to other fruits.

That vine in the pic could be cyclea but it seems very vigorous. Are the fruit about 6mm white spheres and hang in clusters? Foliage should be heart shaped and hairy. From what I can figure mesona which is mint like and cyclea that is a gracile vine make the best jellies and are the most prized. Common names can be confusing but they are the grass jelly herb and grass jelly vine respectively.

If you make it right the sương sām will come out thick and chew.

These are the heart shape Tiliacora triandra or sương sām. During the spring the blooms with tiny cluster of white flower.
