Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Poncirus fruit comparison
« on: November 23, 2018, 04:55:54 AM »
So Poncirus+ seems to be most promising if one tries to use PT-fruits for consumation. I think of extracting aromas for tonic-water for new recipies.

mine died last year because of rind-cracks. It was not well established (weak root system) I have bought a plant from Adavo. Hope it is the same specimen.

Florian, Poncirus polyandra is said to be a hybrid, as far as I know.

Eyeckr, if there is no difference, there is no Swamp Lemon  ;)
Ilya has shown the difference in juice colour and there shold be a lack mof resin aswell, if I got it right.

Adavo has Sudachi? Are you sure? I have been there three weeks ago -no Sudachi. Real Sudachi. Hanayuzu is not Sudachi, that's false.

"Weird. The arboretum's page uses the phrase "Ichang lemon": https://jcra.ncsu.edu/horticulture/our-plants/results.php?search=citrus (first result)

and they also write Citrus japonica and show Citrus (Fortunella) hindsii on their pictures. "Ichanglemon" in this case is clearly C. ichangensis not C. wilsonii

Obviously there are two differnt kind of PT-flowers. Some paperthin and big diameter and others like the one shown on the picture. But all of them without remarkable fragrance.

But "Citrus cavaleriei" is just C. ichangensis' name by Linné. Not Ichanglemon.

"1/16 of poncirus pedigree and not bred for hardiness"

so 1/16 poncirus is for taste  ;)

Thank you, Ilya. Niels Rodin says, 153 is the best (tasting). I will see, if there is much difference. Now I have all of them  ;)

Reminds me of Juanita tangarine. The originial plant is said to have survived -18°C (?) but graftet Juanita's resistance to frost is far from that.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Ichanglemons
« on: August 13, 2018, 11:12:52 AM »
Hi, I have obtained some different(?) types of Ichanglemons. One is marked as "Sebastien" which seems to be a citrusbreeder or a nursery (did not find anything about it, but have a Ichangorange also marked "Sebastien"), one is marked as CRC1512, another 153. Is there any significant difference between these Ichanglemons?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Citrumelo seedlings
« on: June 12, 2018, 01:32:50 PM »
I think it is too early to make any assumptions. I have got my Citrumelo from Ilya. It was mislabeled and is not 5-Star. I have several seedlings and every seedling looks different. It seems to be completely zygotic.

IVIA says about 235: "El árbol es de tamaño mediano, porte abierto, compacto y prácticamente sin espinas." Without spines! Mine is full of spines! And they write about an elipsoid: el fruto .... tiene forma elipsoidal. The question is what kind of elipsoid?

143

This is mine. Which one is the better tasting?

144
I suppose it was grafted on PT? Bernhards "super hardy" Ichang was the first to die surrounded by Ichan-seedlings that all survived on their own roots... My C. ichangensis IVIA survived last winter without branch-damages   when even one of my PT died from bark cracks. It lost 50% of its leaves -no problem.

I grew HaminXFD from seed but don't remember who gave it to me. Maybe Andi. I lost the plant years ago. Nice that it still lives with you, Ilya!

You have to feed the Prague very well if you are eager to get fruits  ;)

Cold Hardy Citrus / Report on winter 2017/18
« on: April 25, 2018, 06:22:30 PM »
Location Vienna/Austria Zone 7b
After a very mild period of tempertures mostly above 0°C we had one week with minimum down to -15° and daytime temperatures below zero. During this week I protected my Citrumelo 5*, Ichangquat and PTXSunki with thick fleece. C. ichangensis IVIA got only some sunprotection and Chimera "Prague" stayed unprotected. Prague does not show any damage. It is now full of flowers. Citrus ichangensis lost 50% of its leaves but  nu further damage. Citrumelo 5* which is high crafted, has heavy cracks on the bark of the rootstock (PT!) and has lost all its leaves. It will lose wood aswell. Ichangquat is nearly dead, but PTXSunki has no damages. It lost all its leaves as it does nearly every year. I was a little bit frustrated because I thought high crafting would prevent frost-cracks on the bark but t oviously does not. Any ideas why not?
