Tropical Fruit Discussion / Concerning hand pollinating soursop
« on: November 20, 2019, 09:39:33 AM »
Hey Forum,

Wondering if anyone could share some links or first hand experience with hand pollinating soursop. Looking for specifics on timing and flower stage. I have a “Miami” soursop from Lara farms in flower right now.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help with Mango leaves (CaC)
« on: November 16, 2019, 08:49:44 AM »
Have a bunch of mango seedlings from this years feeding that I’m evaluating and in particular I planted this seed from a CaC fruit I purchased from tropical acres.

What I like are the leaves are very dark green, sharp and pointy, are somewhat stiff/erect whereas most mangos the leaves flop over. My question to those growing the real Cac, can you post some pics off the leaves as a response? Tia.

This year was biggest crop off my coconut cream tree to date which is planted next to my ice cream mango tree. One of the fruits I picked off the coco cream was smaller and oddly shaped, nearest to the ice cream tree. Planted the seed and it doesn’t look like it the other coco cream sprouts off the tree. I am hoping that this is a cross between the two, and I guess I’ll know someday 🤞

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 1st year attempt at annona breeding.
« on: November 16, 2019, 08:38:01 AM »
Basically just posting pics for any advice and to reference:

Here is a reticulata x sugar apple from seeds a friend gave me, next to a reticulata seedling.

Here is a seedling sugar apple off my Na Dai tree.

Here is a seedling hybrid off my Na Dai tree I crossed with reticulata pollen or Lisa atemoya pollen. I had labeled the different flowers based on which pollen was used BUT some very windy days blew the colored coded markers off the tree 🤷‍♂️ I am leaning toward it being SA x Reticulata though. One thing I did notice when planting the seeds were that they were longer and thin like reticulata seeds (whether that holds true is my guess).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Macadamia nut, cultivar?
« on: November 09, 2019, 11:02:09 AM »

Hey Forum,

Bought the above macadamia nut from Excalibur as “Beaumont” which was what I was looking for. Finally got some new growth on the tree and according to Wikipedia “Beaumont” is supposedly reddish new growth. Can anyone confirm if I have a mislabeled tree?

Thanks,

Joe

Hey Forum,

Came across two videos

1) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iE3LNo2wXOA looks like discussing seedless avocado, can anyone that speaks Spanish provide a summary of this? Is it an explanation on how produce a seedless variety?

2) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rZQe8XwZF9A this video is on inducing blooming by girdling branches, I find this really interesting but am confused about about how the fertilization ie nitrogen, potassium, and boron plays into the discussion because of a possible miscommunication with the subtitle translation? Can you girdle anytime of the year to induce blooming?

Thanks for any help with these.

Planted out a few seeds from a soursop I got at a Latin market and looks like one sprout has marble white swirls on the leaves.

Gonna keep a close eye on this one.

Hey Forum,

Here is a sugar apple I planted from a seed a while back but wondering if any of you recognize which type it is as I’ve heard they pretty much come true to type from seed?

Actually just picked up some rambutan at winn dixie yesterday, just ok, taste is there but flesh adheres to seed and peels off part of thin outer seed coat on some fruits giving off bad texture and taste. Hear there are better varieties out there that don't have this issue, believe they were shipped in from mexico.

This recent article is hilarious though! https://www.vice.com/en_in/article/3k3x3j/the-alien-fruit-in-netflixs-another-life-is-actually-a-rambutan

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Today’s hunt for Pond Apple rootstock
« on: July 20, 2019, 05:46:16 PM »
Planning on grafting up a bunch of annona’s in the future so decided to find some Pond Apple material for rootstock.

1st stop Jensen Beach, Haney Creek Park:

There are lots of mature trees here with fruit on them, and overall pretty scenery. Picked a few fruits to see about harvesting the seeds.

Next went to this pond in palm city, Mapp rd and 29th street where I was able to dig up a sapling and about 50+ smaller baby seedlings that I found in mud under larger trees.

Hope this helps anyone looking for rootstock in Martin county area.

Been opening up mango seeds for a few years and never have I seen a polyembryonic Ice cream mango embryo. This is not a mix up either. How this happens exactly I have no idea.

Some new trees I picked up:

“Worlds best mulberry” from botanical Bryce Etsy account... have a makeshift shade shield set up with large plastic lid the cutting was recently rooted and hardly any roots in the 1 gallon pot, hoping it doesn’t get fried in the heat and takes hold, giving it lots of water shade n mulch.

Fernandez grafted red custard apple and “Miami” grafted soursop from Lara farms

Genova red illama grafted onto pond apple from Excalibur.

Very annoying, these small brown beetles come out at night and are eating the hell out of the newly flushed growth on my young seedling lychee. No other trees are being affected by these beetles in my yard including a much larger lychee opposite the property 🤷‍♂️. Any ideas how to kill these bastards?
