Is it easier to root cuttings or plant seed of Jackfruit?

Speaking of stone fruits, garden prince almond seems like an nice alternative to places where oil-rich avocado and macadamia nut can't grow, while still having low chill.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: watering papayas
« on: January 18, 2015, 07:11:31 PM »
I let my papayas dry out between watering. In fact, I only water twice a month in the winter. For some  reason my 'maradol' isn't doing so well compared to my others. A 'tainung #2' bought at the same size has tripled in height, while the 'maradol' is slowly dying.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Highest yielding fruit trees?

Jackfruit fruits very well in San Diego. If you search around 'jackfruit California' on the forum, then you'll find that in zone 10b, it's particularly easy. 10a and 10b don't differ much. This translates into Sunset zones 23 & 24. There are even jackfruit trees in San Diego Zoo, but they don't give them enough water to fruit. As long as humidity is above 60% and cold isn't too bad, jackfruit does fine.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How to keep Annona pollen from drying out?
« on: November 24, 2014, 10:40:49 PM »
Many of us Arizonians have attempted this, but no avail. Even trees that are 6 years old never fruit. So I was wondering how Californians preserve moisture in the flowers, since you just had a tough drought. Any suggestions would be nice. Also, is tying a damp plastic bag to branches holding fruitlets a good idea?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Rootstocks for Lucuma?

Is Lucuma more or less drought tolerant than Canistel/Ross Sapote?

34
Well, PARL 244 OR Torrance PCH#1  ;D

35
I've decided to change my PM from before:
PARL 244
Visalia Yellow
Jeronimo M.V. OR 'Cerritos #2'

I decided to change because everyone was in line for Torrance PCH# :D

Questions
How long did PARL 244 take to fruit?
What are 'Peruvian Yellow' and 'Mexican Sweet' like?  :P
How is 'Cerritos #2' doing?

36
I think I'll wait for the two stems to thicken, so that I can have a multigraft tree.

37
I though that it was strange that the stem of my mango was thick as soon as it grew about 5 leaves. Is there high variation?

You should cut one open and show it to us.  ;D

How long do mangoes usually take to be ready to be grafted? I saw online that most mango seedlings are tall and spindly, until they grow thick stems. Also, what is the preferred mango seedling rootstock for SoCal. I hear that it's Manila, but I'm not sure.

The HD closest to me also sells red malaysian in the spring.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is this mango seedling ready for grafting?
« on: October 16, 2014, 01:56:55 AM »
I started this Tommy Atkins last June and the main stem is quite thick for such a young plant. Here, it is compared to a mature branch on my 'Okrung' mango. It's quite healthy and does well under full sun, but it is the first time I have grafted mango.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Papaya Flower Bud?
« on: October 16, 2014, 01:50:11 AM »
Is this papaya bud a flower? Today, the leaf branch below the buds fell off. It's been about a month and they haven't changed in shape. There is no pollinator nearby (it's my first time growing), but the bud doesn't look like a flower. Show I give it some flowering inducing fertilizer and hope its a hermaphrodite or wait until next year? We get 5 days of freezing temperatures a year. By the way, this variety is Tainung #2 - better cold tolerance than most papayas.

Rain? RAIN? What is this 'rain' do you speak of? Water coming from the heavens? That's just crazy! Believe me, I'm crazy when I say you can gardening in Arizona.

I've never tried those varieties, but after trying Hawaiian papayas from the local Asian supermarket, they are so much better. They have a less musky overtone.

I have extremely dry, dense clay soil that is high calciferous. So I need to add tons of sand.

That's just like basin irrigation, but different! Anyway, I've come to a conclusion that the variety does not matter, and that even if I'm lucky to grow papaya that is an amazing feat.
