Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Back to the ground you go you wretch!

is he planning his escape from CA to TX?
Got quite the stir at a Central Texas Facebook gardening forum, many were stumped as to what this was.  One person thought it was a hot dog, that's how much folks know about growing avocados here!

This Reed seed germinated in the fruit.  I decided to have a little fun with some of my wife's nail polish.  Looks like fingers coming out of the ground.  ;D

Been eating Reeds since June. 19 mos. of hang time and still picking.

Had a very nice visit from a great San Diego grower/member and friends, Shane Atwell.  We're standing in front of Reed, Sharwil/Lamb on the left, GEM in the center, Ardith in the back.  Pineapple Pleasure, Orange Sherbet and Juicy Peach cocktail tree on the right.

What do you use for a permanent container?
I have had two 1/2 wine barrels and both also eventually fell apart.

for the wood barrel, do you see any sign of root bound?
Has anyone try to grow in an oak wine barrel cut in half?  Do you think root bound won't be a problem with this type of container?

I have over 30-  1/2 wine barrels in both synthetic materials and wood in which I grow citrus, avocado's, dwarf peaches, nectarines and blueberries in my yard.

The surround does work really well.  I put in a bunch of new avocado seedlings out on a hillside in full sun in June. They are out there getting roasted but they are flushing and no damage.  I sprayed them with Surround 3X already since June.  Before each heat wave spray the new leaves, then they flush new leaves and before the next heat wave spray again, repeat..   they look perfect and growing nicely from very small 1.2gal pots straight into full exposure.

2 cups per gallon seems to be a nice mix.  Then a quick dusting, it takes very little effort and works like a champ.

What about using surround spray on dragon fruit plants?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Help with sir prize avocado branching
« on: July 18, 2020, 08:15:36 PM »
I have the same problem with my Don Gillogly I bought couple weeks ago.  The two lower branches are as big as the main trunk but can't bear to cut it.  So I stake them hoping that they can grow upward instead of growing outward.

Can you root from this cutting or it has to be grafted?

Typically large trees at nursery are put in these trapezoid box 24" or 36" wide at the top and smaller at the bottom?  Does anyone know why these type of box are  used?   Does it help with the root of the tree?

I had the Hass & Sharwil from your tree. The late season Hass is good but the Sharwil is on another level.  Just my 2 cents.
We did a taste test with these varieties the other day.  Reed, hass, ardith, sharwil, sir prize, pinkerton.  Reed and ardith need more time so not fair for them.  Sharwil, pinkerton, and hass are consistently the best fruit off my trees.  Im going to say all around best tree and fruit is hass.  The fruit quality is superior, the tree grows well, maes tons of fruit, and they hang forever.  Sharwil also good all around but I need more years to see how the trees perform here.

Citrus General Discussion / branch die off
« on: April 29, 2020, 10:38:47 PM »

The second to last bud is failing from the top, but alive from the center on down, could potentially go either way. The remainder appear to be alive. Once you force the buds, it will become more definitive.

All the t-bud are on two branches...should I part of the top of the two branch off?  Thanks

So I did some t-budding onto a carrizo exactly 3 weeks ago.   I remove the grafting tape this morning.  I'm not sure the t-bud take or not.  Can anyone take a look at let me know which one takes?

dang..I missed this.  May be you have avocado scion again in 3 or 4 months?

Same here on my alano sapodilla.  I got it may of 2019.  Haven't shown any sign of growth yet.  The owner of Champa where I got it from said it was an airlayered tree.

Noticed my first flower buds on my rose apple grown from seed. plus everything else. citrus, mango, surinam, mulberry, kei apple, fig, white sapote, avo, list goes on. still waiting 8 years later on my sapodilla... what are the chances it was airlayered as advertised.

PMed you.

I would use high density planting concept and plant all three.  They may produce less in the future if you plant them close together but you have 3 different varieties year round.  If you want to pick one to plant in a container, according to the link below, "holiday can be grown in container".

https://yamagamis.com/newguides/FruitGuides/AvocadoGuide.pdf

I am new to the forum and avocado.  I have been reading this threads every nights but only got to page. 10.  I am intending to finish them all to pickup all I could from your experience.  I recently bought a Holiday  in 3 gallons, a Reed in red sleeve and a Carmen in black sleeve from Laguna Hills Nursery. My wife and daughter love cado and mango.   They could have them every day if they could.   I like to have a happy family so I decided to plant our own.  However, I got over excited and over bought.

I now have a dilemma-my back yard is too small for all 3 avocado in the ground along with 3 mango and a atemoya.  Some plants have to go in the future if they don't do well.  I am thinking of grafting of more cultivars to the best plant in the future for more varieties.  Most likely I have to do the same for the mango.

Which of the 2 avocado should I transplant to the ground and which one should be in the pot? I have a Holiday, a Reed and a Carmen.  Which one have the best chance for success in a small garden in raise bed because of Orange's clay soil.

Thank you in advance for feedback.

Still waiting to try a Sharwil from Brad's tree.  I got one last saturday.

Has anyone try a Gillogly avocado yet?  Gary Matsuoka from Laguna Hills Nursery said it's the best avocado he has so far.

I just started grafting.  I'm looking forward to grafting avocado soon.   I have a couple seedling trees that are about 1/4 to 1/2 in trunk diameter.  Has anyone try to t-bud with avocado and has success?

Citrus General Discussion / grafting scion from CCCP
« on: March 05, 2020, 11:56:52 AM »
Yesterday I received the scion from CCCP.  I ordered Xie Shan, USDA 88-2, and Boukhobza.  I used mostly T-bud on my Carizzo rootstock in a pot.  Very easy to lift the bark this time of the year.   I did a couple of cleft grafts but the budwood is too small so I don't think they will take.  So after budding and wrapped with buddy tape, do I need to cover the graft union with alumninum foil and keep it under shade?

Millet..for foliar feed using Peters 25-5-15, I lurked through your previous post and I think you said foliar feed is 10% of recommended rate so that translate to 0.1 teaspoon per gallon?  Have a blessed first Sunday of Lent.

In my opinion Peters 25-5-15 is the very best fertilizer for citrus .  The bag does give a rate for use when used to apply to containers as well as in ground.  You will find the amount for Small Volume Measuring on the bags lower left hand corner.   The rate for your container is 1 teaspoon of Peters per gallon of water.  This will give your tree 225 PPM N..

I'm having the same problem.  I think it has something to do with overwatering and I didn't feed it very much last year.

Since the beginning of this thread, have you given the tree any fertilizer, either as a ground application, or floral spray?

None since then.
