SURPRISE SURPRISE!!!!

56
Some pictures for friends to link@PM.

a.haitiensis no fruit but wait..what is that?

cordia sp

mabolo forming

a.glabra

57
first label them with like tape and a pencil..if indoor that's fine for some months or more...however the tape can fall off over time..outside with rains and such the tape will wear out and eventually become unreadable,

then if you have plastic labels use those but it's better with pencil...if you don't have have plastic ones use wood sticks..

the ultimate step is to find a flat light color or white rock and write on those!

58
label label label and upgrade your labeling strategies you will soon find out it's the most important thing in this hobby...which is something very few people mention :P

also pencils are better than markers for plants. they last much longer and can withstand rain.

59
triumph persimmon and most pomegranates would fruit there for sure...they even fruit where i live sometimes...

 in terms of taste:
cherimoya
biriba
litchi
canistel or mamey sapote...i like those too.

60
Well there's one at bellamy but it's like 50 bucks...maybe when i get paid next week but i'm thinking about it xD

I have a few calyptranthes  and myrcias(unidentified from the island) but how to even send....maybe with a permit. Also Got Olosapo and Sunsapote seedlings.

Do you sell Olosapo and Sunsapote seedlings by any chance?
and if so, do you ship seedlings internationally?

No, the sunsapote was sold to me and the olosapo came from a trade.
Only if i find a way to send them legally, would have to ask someone.

61

Doesn’t seem to mention it being dioecious.  Related to Mammey.  Anyone able to translate?

Janet
Yeah it never mentions that plus i've never heard of one in this family...but you never know.

translation:
it is a specie related to mamey sapote(Pouteria Sapota) from which it shares some morphological
characteristics

Well there's green and purple

the "green" one is starting to become light green-yellow ish and they are a bit overripe...the purple one will be looking mostly purple.

Well there's some info here...
Aside from describing the leaves and flowers it says
that P.Domingensis(Gaertn.f.) Baehni is not common in Dominican Republic but it's common in Haiti,Florida,Bahamas and Cuba but the variety cuprea(Urb. & Ekm.) Cron is the common variety in DR... but now i'm more confused in which one is what... go figure :)
It also says that the wood? from this plant has "hypnotic" properties.

I call it "sapote culebra" to distinguish it. Pouteria domingensis has a rich history in the Caribbean & Florida.
This Sapotaceae at one time was considered native to Florida, now considered naturalized, but still rare.

Have 1 tree in the ground, from Cuban seeds. I ate the fruit from what I think was called Totuma, but they were a tad overripe.
I know of very few trees in Florida.

I believe what I have planted is Pouteria dominguensis subsp. Dominguensis (round leaves)

The "Totuma" I observed and tasted has pointy leaves. I have 2 seedlings from that tree.

Digigarden I am interested in any info about subsp. Cuprea to review whatever you found.
Aside from this link - http://cedaf.org.do/arboles_dominicanos/index_ncomun.php?comun=Totuma
Good info about using the Kew list to help with names.

Nice stuff, are all of them totumas or only the ones in the right?

Yes in this document you see it has roundish leaves but the plants i've seen they all had longer and pointy leaves...so i'm still confused about that. There's some very old books that describe such species and i need to take a look at them :)

Thanks man it’s only $5!
He must’ve just released them lol

just don't take em all xD
If you get permits and stuff maybe we can trade myrtaceous plants...look at my list i may get more.

Well there's a lot of species with the name Domingensis out there so idk about that.

Where did you get this plant btw?

Pouteria Domingensis=Totuma

It's Domingensis...there are typos floating around. Seems there's P.Domingensis subsp Domingensis with Longer leaves such as this one and there's a subsp Cuprea with rounder leaves? http://cedaf.org.do/arboles_dominicanos/index_ncomun.php?comun=Totuma
That's all the info for now until i find more from old books...

The fruit tastes more like a wild canistel and it's a nice lil thing and not bad...but cannot compete against the larger pouterias. I had a couple of seeds but never sold em as some seeds got confiscated so i've stopped selling seeds. But still go ahead fruit this thing and sell it over there as you will be one of the few selling these eh.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Eugenia seedling dieback
« on: June 21, 2022, 04:21:50 PM »
It can be frustrating. There are so many factors.
A lot of my seeds came up then some shriveled and died back and re grew. Now they are decent looking. But yes, all the plants I have purchased that are over the hump never die even up here.
Maybe higher humidity? I want to start experimenting, but am busy for now.

it's this...the humidity and best to avoid that scorching sun when they're young..can tell you most of the eugenias sold here in the forum do sprout...it's the guabiju that doesn't sprout for me and i've tried from 3 different sources but nothing.
most eugenias are delicate like that for a while...if they need watering and receive direct sunlight that day they will dry up and probably die!! if you water them right away they may send another shoot...so many eugenia species have trouble putting up new leaves so what they do is send more shoots.

however eugenia uniflora is more torelant of cold, heat, dry conditions, disease and all of that...that's why it's nearly unkillable once established and can become invasive in some tropical/subtropical countries.

71
if you put some sort of mosquito net they won't be able to fly out of the container when they hatch :)
but also prevents them from laying eggs there so less will make their way there.

it only takes one or two weeks for them to hatch...then when you water with this water whatever larvae will die there.

A pic of the plant and another showing the juice staining my hand. It isn't apparent from the pic but the plant has a bushier habit. I don't know if this is a result of growing in a very dry climate. I will have to visit the area after some heavy rains, whenever that may be, to see if the fruit gets any bigger.

There are some imperfections on the skin but this fruit was not spoiled
.

those leaves have some similarities with mexican species for sure...
