FGM Yard photos (Sept 2012)
« on: September 28, 2012, 08:12:14 PM »

Big Red sugar apple

These were the last of my Big Reds from a few weeks ago.

Caught this red headed woodpecker enjoying one of my green sugar apples

This is a really nice & sweet Papaya. They grow very large and have few seeds. I got it from a yard in Fort Lauderdale.

Noel, do you have to bag your papaya to prevent fruit fly infestation?

Papayas that fruit in mid summer have bug problems but these normally have minimal problems. I will let you know when they ripen.

Noel, any idea what cultivar is your Big Red?

The name of the cultivar is 'Big Red'. He named the cultivar himself.

Then, what I put on my profile plant list is correct. Thanks.

Murahilin is correct. It was a seedling of a red fruit that I got from a fruit council meeting many years ago. It is very prolific without hand pollination and many grow up to 20 ozs. Very delicious and different from the the greens.

I am not aware that any of my Big Red seedlings have produced anything but red seedlings. I have fruited at least 6 BR seedlings here and all have been red.

Noel, you might have just signed the death warrant for the Kampong Mauve... Bigger fruit, better overall quality, easy propagation, this is a Kampong Mauve killer.

Noel,
I have 3-4 more BR seedlings here now.   :)
Hopefully I can report red fruit in a couple of years!

FloridaGreenMan it looks like this might be the beginning of a successful sugar apple business! ;D I sent you a PM, it would be awesome if you could sell a seedling. But hey, 3 yrs from seed, then seeds are great too  :) Indeed, your fruits looks very appetizing & delicious!!

Made only one mistake, I labeled them and my customers thought they were for sale, had to hide them!lol.   Everything looks reveal healthy and starting to take off.
