Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Should I let this mango fruit
« on: February 03, 2021, 07:50:42 PM »
It should have plenty of water.  It is facing north.  I cannot plant anything facing south, as that is my front lawn and HOA will not allow a mango to be planted.
Soul isn't the best, that area used to be 100% concrete patio that i busted out.  Soil is heavy clay and more than likely alkaline, like the rest of Phoenix metro.

Facing north does it get full sunlight during the days there? Ultimate fertilizer for mangos is nothing more than water and sunlight. If it doesn’t get full sunlight you will have trouble with that tree. Also is very close to the house and that is far from ideal. To be honest I would replant it farther from the house. If you plan to keep it there it will need some serious care until it is reaching full sunlight during the day.

I tried a seedling graft as well and waiting to see if I have any luck. I went a little higher but please post your results as I’m curious.

I fruited a seedling sweet tart for the first time off my seedling tree and off my aunt's manila tree that I grafted onto. The seedling tree  itself  produced around  15 decent size fruits. It tasted very similar to the original. Fruit was just smaller. The seed was from the mango tasting at Gary's house in Palm Springs from way back when. It was in a pot until two years ago.

Original ST on left, seedling on the right

Seedling sweet tart grafted onto manila holding  7 fruits on the small graft. You can still see the graft union on the bottom.

Do you by chance have a picture of the entire seedling tree? Also how old is the seedling and was this it’s first year fruiting? Thanks!

I will be following this. Cool idea for a thread. Seems like a lot of people have had success getting fruit a lot sooner than many say. I tend to hear 5-10 years as the standard comment but seems to be a lot faster. I planted a bunch of various seedlings in pots. I will be using them to see if I can learn to graft though. I likely won’t grow them out. I also would be willing to give some away to anyone that wanted to grow them out.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Any Information on ST Maui mango?
« on: October 14, 2020, 08:13:10 PM »
I have had a couple from Alex at tropical acres farms. They are excellent! Very large fruit. Probably the largest I’ve seen. If memory serves a bright red skin. Definitely a unique flavor. Unlike any other mango I’ve had for sure. I just looked at my notes on it and I wrote, “large fiberless fruit incredibly sweet peach like flavor” I gave it a 10. My understanding is that it is a very vigorous growing tree. I won’t grow it for this reason as I have limited space. If you have room it’s a great tasting fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ok time of year to graft onto mango seedlings?
« on: September 29, 2020, 01:00:47 AM »
I started a bunch of seedlings early in the year with the intention of simply seeing if I could be successful at grafting on to them. Several of the early ones appear to be of sufficient size. Is now an acceptable time of year to attempt this or should I wait until spring time? Anyone with some experience would be appreciated. Location is Florida.

Im pretty far from the coast.  Im open to other varieties that are recommended.

Let’s start over. What do you have planted now? Also what have you tasted and liked? How much space do you have? What are the priorities. Best fruit? Disease resistance? Prolific workhorse fruiting every year? If you are only planting one mango tree then you should go for one of the tried and true reliable producers. If you have a dozen already that changes things.

Jake fruit and future or anyone else for that matter have you had success with Cac as rootstock or were you just growing them as seedling trees?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Separating poly seedlings with 12 sprouts.
« on: September 13, 2020, 02:56:02 PM »
Update on this in case anyone was curious. I did separate them out. One clump of 4 was stuck together so I repotted those as one cluster. The others were easily separated. I put them all in their own pots and will see if they survive to next year so I can have more rootstock to practice grafting with. They were growing very slowly all together so hopefully with their own space they get big enough to be viable for next year.

Ok thanks guys. I’ll try it. Surprised me how many there were from one seed.

Are there any fans of Duncan?

I think Duncan may be my favorite mango I grow. Flavor is a 9 out of 10 for me. Disease resistant. Very productive. Season this year was long for me with first fruit being eaten first week of April and last being in July. There are other better tasting mangoes out there but for an all around workhorse it wins for sure. I know a lot of people plant Glenn for this reliable productive role but I think Duncan wins the title. I will likely be moving to a different house within a year or two and the first I plant will be another Duncan.
Did you find a big difference between early and late Duncans, as others have mentioned?

To be honest very little difference. They get awfully close to tree ripe wince the yellow on one side touches the bottom of the fruit it is about to drop. Take it off the tree and it’s ready in as little as 24-48 hours inside. The early ones if picked early can have a slight washed out taste but it’s all in when they are picked for me. I had maybe 2 that were a little bland the rest were excellent.

As for growth habit mine has not been in ground very long and I never topped it or tipped it until this season. I got it as a 7 gallon from Excalibur and it has grown well and fruited with about 20 fruit the second summer it was in ground. I would love to see what it looks like for some other people that have had them in ground for a while.

During this season I started several seedlings so that by next year I would be able to experiment with grafting on to them. I have had several both poly and mono seeds with my Duncans being the most successful. I also have Glenn, Honey Kiss Cac, and Maha Chanok. One of the CAC seeds germinated and currently has 12 surviving sprouts coming up all about 6-8 inches tall. I was wondering if anyone has had this many come from one seed? Also will they have their own roots and be able to be separated and potted on their own? Lastly some of my other larger ones already seem like they are large enough to graft with but are still completely green. Do I need to wait until next year or is it possible to do it now? Thanks everyone.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Space coast Florida giveaway. Free stuff.

I’ve done this here a few times so here goes another one. I have some things I want gone. No charge but I will not ship anything and the in ground trees you will need to dig up. I have a shovel and I’ll help but I won’t remove them until you get here. If you feel obligated to exchange money please donate to any non political charity my choice would be the SPCA but nothing is required or expected. Ok so here’s what I’m getting rid of.

In a pot I have a mulberry tree I grew from cutting that was very green up until about a month ago and while it is still green the Florida summer sun and living life in a bucket many leaves have fallen off. It needs to go in ground. Not sure what type it is as I got the cutting from someone that didn’t know.

Brown Turkey fig in a pot. Looks the same. Same reasons probably.

Shishito pepper plant.

Unknown hot pepper plant. I was gifted seeds and tried the peppers and didn’t like them much. They are spicy. Just not a flavor I really liked.

Dwarf June plum. This thing just won’t die. I dug it up and threw it in a bucket so I could plant something else in its place. The thing looked deader than Jeffrey Epstein but I just watered the carcass of a tree every day and after a month it started sprouting all over. Looks to have fresh fruit growing on it as well. I didn’t like the fruit so it goes.  Very easy to propagate and I hear it grows true from seed.

All the above are in pots. Some are in buckets I turned in to pots. I would like the buckets back the pots are cheap nursery pots I don’t really care about. If you plan to keep them in a bucket I would appreciate a replacement bucket or $5 so I can buy another one from Home Depot. Food grade buckets only as the others rot in the sun fairly quick. Like those darn orange Home Depot things.

In ground I have a Smith fig. The darn figs do this every year when summer gets hot they need water daily or their leaves fall off and they just sit there looking miserable. It is a strange shaped tree but it is very much so alive and needs someone better than me to keep it healthy. And possibly a little shade from peak summer sun. The figs from this tree look like leftover produce you forgot about in the bottom of your fridge but they are one of the best tasting.

Gold finger banana in ground. The thing with digging up bananas you want gone is they have all this root system underground and unless you dig up every last bit it comes back to life. I want it gone so this means all the way gone. It is likely a good banana but they need wind protection and mine just don’t get any so they are green but that’s about it.

Some unknown banana that suffers from the same wind issues as above. Makes small bananas. Never tried them because as soon as it flowers a thunderstorm takes it down in an effort to watch me use profanity when I realize the damage.

So there it is. All free. Just please make an attempt to keep them alive. A picture of it in ground somewhere would be nice to know they survived the journey.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Space coast banana giveaway/curb alert

I dug up a large cluster of raja puri bananas and put them by the side of the road for trash pickup. If anyone wants to get them let me know and I’ll put them aside. Since the corm can be cut up and made into new banana plants there is probably an endless supply there. Anyone wants them let me know. And no, I will not ship them.  Fairly time sensitive as I think they pick up in the morning for trash. I will go save some if I hear back before then. Location is Merritt Island FL.

So apparently Green Jungle in Orlando has a recording saying they are closed for Corona virus. I looked for an email and on their Facebook page and couldn’t find out when they plan to open. Any chance someone here knows when they plan to open or have some other inside knowledge? Thanks

Interested if still available. Reading through the thread several different prices are mentioned. PM sent for clarification. Thanks.

Hey all I’m curious if anyone can tell me the best place to get buddy tape and other grafting equipment. Mainly I have read about a tool that supposedly makes a perfect cleft out of both the root stock and the perfect fit from the scion to go into said cleft. I’m looking for a reliable safe place to buy online and get these items shipped as well as if any of you have any experience with a tool like this. Thanks so much.

22
I'd check green jungle nursery in orlando or best plants nursery in Apopka. Also, Larry probably has what you need at Our Kids Tropical Nursery.

Thanks for the suggestions. Our kids tropical nursery had what I was looking for!

23
I still have a Desert king fig tree, and the Brazilian red banana I want gone if anyone is interested. I have had difficulty getting messages via this forum apparently some people haven’t gotten them but I’ll check back. The fig will be dug up within the next 24 hours and would prefer it not to be wasted and thrown out.

Looking for a Kari and either a Bell or Sri Kembangan carambola tree. In an ideal world I would like to pick up an Orange Sherbet mango at the same time. Local nurseries in Merritt Island, cocoa and Rockledge are all out and I don’t want to drive all the way to Excalibur unless I really need to.

I’m looking for a Kari and either a Bell or Sri Kembagan carambola and my local nurseries near Cocoa FL are all sold out. Anyone know of a place nearby closer than Excalibur? Thanks.
