« on: September 27, 2018, 05:17:22 PM »
Hi everyone

I decided to try my hand at the art of grafting.  Now, I have a question.

Do you look at the family or genus name to know if you can graft two plants on one another?

Thank you

Can someone please give an opinion on the matter?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Cherry apple, the mother of all apples
« on: March 16, 2018, 03:22:57 PM »
Good day

Could someone please help me to identify this tree?  I searched the internet and found this website http://www.natureproducts.net/Crops/Apple.html.  Is it the same fruit and is there perhaps a botanical name so that I could search for more info?  I assume if it is the cherry apple, it is edible?  The one tree bears yellow fruit and the other tree bears dark red fruit.

Ever dreamt of owning your own South African property, but don’t know where to start or where in South Africa?  Let me make it easier for you.  140 km away from the world-known Kruger National Park.  72 km from God’s Window.  130 km from Blyde River Canyon.   50 km from Pilgrim’s Rest.  95 km from Hoedspruit where there are many wildlife conservation farms.  82 km from Sabie where there are quite a few waterfalls.  Do I need to say more?  A small town, going by the name Ohrigstad, might just be your answer.  It is known as the gateway to the panorama route.  It is the northern part of the Drakensberg mountain range.  Your own little African paradise in the middle of all the hottest tourist spots, but still quiet enough for some me-time.  This is also a bird-watcher’s paradise with close to 100 bird species.  Here you can also harvest marula, stamvrug, sourplum, red ivory, wild medlar, raisinbush, various cacti and prickly pear in the area or buy some of them next to the road.  Hey, there might even be more fruit that I didn't think of right now.  Build your own dream vacation home on a stand with a great view.  2 stands are available, next to each other.  The sizes are 1662 m2 and 1716 m2 each.  Get a great value deal of $22 000(US) each.  If you buy both stands, a special price can be discussed.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Himalayan Papaya??
« on: January 10, 2017, 03:25:24 PM »
I met this guy who has these trees.  I will attach photos.  It is also male and female plants.  The seeds of the fruit resembles pawpaw / papaya seeds.  It fruits about 3 years after germination.  He calls it himalayan papaya or malay papaya.  If you taste the fruit in a certain way, it almost taste like papaya.  What is it really and what is the botanical name?  I would like to read more about it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Can cassabanana pollen be stored?
« on: February 02, 2016, 04:20:56 AM »
My cassabanana plants are doing very well, but unfortunately I have only male flowers so far.  I can see that there is a female flower on its way and I can only see this one so far.  I've cut a few male flowers off and put it in the refrigerator.  Will I be able to use it?  Any other ideas?

« on: February 02, 2016, 04:16:43 AM »
I was thinking about all the experts on this forum that share some of their knowledge with us.  I am sure some of you have YouTube channels.

Would any of you please be so kind as to give the forum members the name of your channel, so that we can have a look at your videos and learn some more?

I am always watching videos on YouTube and wondering if I had contact with any of you on this forum.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What on earth is this?? Is it edible?
« on: January 17, 2016, 03:35:06 PM »
We found this when we went foraging for wild fruits today.  It is growing on a vine.  The size of the fruit is about as big as a kumquat.  The skin is soft.

22
We have this vines growing around here, but we never knew the name, until I stumbled upon it on the internet.  Can someone please confirm if it is Coccinia Sessilifolia.  Nobody around here eats it, except the birds and insects.

The fruit on the vine:

A ripe fruit and another cut open.

Hi all

Today we drove around, looking for wild fruit.  We found these three types of cacti.  Could anyone give me info whether it is safe to eat or not?  It grows in the northern part of Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces in South Africa

We went back to this cactus in the dark to see if any of the flowers are open, but none were.  Most of these plants were on the ground, but some went up in trees, almost like dragon fruit.  It is almost a kind of creeper.

Here is another type.  He is standing upright, almost like those that you see in the movies that is playing in the desert.  He can grow very tall, to 3 meters and more.

Here is another type:

Thank you

Please help to ID these seeds and plant.

I ordered these seeds from someone in China (not on this forum).  I ordered Gac seeds and this is what I received:

It does not totally look like a sitrus type of seed.

Also, this plant germinated from one of these seeds.
