Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruit haul in Da Nang
« on: March 21, 2023, 12:22:38 AM »
The maprang are extremely good. Exceeded my expectations. The mangoes on the bottom left have the thinnest seed I’ve ever encountered and the taste is phenomenal. Now I know why they were pricier than all the other varieties. The mangosteens were pricy at about $8 per kg. The longans are just ok. Still not sure if any of these are Cat chu mangoes. They all seem different than what we know as Cac. Sugar apple 8/10. very content with what I’m finding here in Da Nang

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Paw paw seeds
« on: September 19, 2022, 10:35:05 AM »
Selling these for $1 per seed , minimum of 20 plus shipping. Shipping is $2-12 in the states depending on if it’s shipped priority or not.

Varieties available are Shenandoah, Susquehanna and a wild type. Shenandoah has a mild, sweet, with a custard-like texture. Also have some Susquehanna, which have a stronger flavor and the flesh is more yellow. The wild types vary in quality but can be really good.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Persimmon question

I was told one can freeze hachiya (astringent) persimmons and when they thaw they won’t be astringent anymore. Is this true?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Another rewarding Borneo fruit trip
« on: December 12, 2018, 01:17:10 PM »
Still here hunting for kutejensis. Bummed the Kesusu were not ripe , but still have seen and eaten some great fruits, my second time to Borneo. Thanks to frank Sekiya in 2003 for inspiring me to come here/ only in recent years did I make it a reality. These new tropical fruit lover elitists like the ‘fit shortie eats’ people act like it’s something new that Borneo is a hot spot for rare tropical fruits when really people like Frankie were coming here decades ago to gather seeds and budwood to bring back to Hawaii. Anyways , I’m surely hooked and will be back for round 3, Kalimantan edition maybe next time

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Trip to Borneo was a success
« on: January 26, 2018, 02:03:18 AM »
I will say musang king in Kuala Lumpur was some of th best fruit tasting of the whole
Trip. I spent 6 weeks traveling around with my gf who is also into fruits. Anyways, back to musang king. Is it really worth the price ? (Of around $12 per kilo). The answer is yes but the price is definitely high. For me, I really like arancillo in Davao and the taste is similar to musang king , bitter sweet, creamy texture. And price in peak season is only a dollar or 2 per kilo there for the best quality arancillo

We sent seeds back to Hawaii of Durio gravoelns (3 types/ orange , red and even one that was orange and yellow, , graveolens x zibethinus hybrids (2 types, one red and one orange), Durio oxylenaus , couple types of cempedak and, many dabai seed which were  my favorite new fruit for me. Some of the cempedak we ate were very rich tasting, making even a Marang seem not as flavorful, and a jackfruit boring. the cempedak would give off strong hints of butterscotch and caramel , leaving my mouth feeling coated in sugar. Many of these seed will be going into the ground soon at a friends piece of land on the hamakua coast on big island.

I recommend Borneo to any exotic fruit lover and I plant to go back again at some point to eat Durio kutejensis which we didn’t get to try on this trip. Also dabai is a really amazing fruit which I can easily eat a pound or two everyday if they are available. Yet, when it comes to getting to feast on unlimited good quality durian Davao still is top for me

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango ID
« on: December 26, 2017, 08:21:49 PM »
Found this sweet mango in a super market about a week ago in Jakarta. I believe. Gedong gincu Is not the name of the variety but describes it having a bright flesh, as it did. My best guess would be Alphonso. Anyone like to guess?
