Citrus General Discussion / Re: Growing lemons from seed?
« on: July 09, 2017, 10:29:37 AM »
I have grown several lemons from seed.  The few that I grew never reached fruiting stage.  When I got rid of them they were approximately 3 feet high.  A seedling lemon has an almost straight up growth pattern.  What you read on FB was a fairy tale.

Marcin welcome to the citrus forum.  The First Canadian "lemon" is an exciting find.  Thanks for posting it.  Great post.

I've taken Colchicine for gout, the strength of the pill is 0.6 mg.   I do not know the strength needed for triplorid use, but one could dissolve enough pills.  As mentioned a lot of caution would be required when working with colchicine.

I wonder if the Prague Citsuma that has incomplete flowers can be "pollinated" with gibbereillic acid the same way clementines are pollinated using gibberellic acid.

Any reading material on Dekopon that I have ever found is on the Internet, such as some o of he links shown throughout this thread.  Typing in the word Dekopon will of course bring up many articles..  I've never seen any info in book form.

patchofpentaphyllum in Florida you can purchase Dekopon (aka shiranuhi) from Harris citrus.  Just type in Harris Citrus into the Internet and you will easily find them.

Personally, I much prefer Marsh white grapefruit, left hanging on the tree until the month of March.

laidbackdood, always nice seeing you.  Just because the air is at 14C does not mean the soil at the root zone level  is at 14C.

Citradia, a good rule of thumb is--------The more hardy a citrus tree is the slower it is to leaf out in the spring.

Most citrus varieties are not pruned, but let to grow into their common round shape.  Dekopon is different.  In Japan Dekopon are trimed almost exactly as a peach tree is pruned.

HLB is not being controlled in China, or anywhere else as far as I know.  It is illegal to bring plants into this country.  That is how HLB got started in Florida.

Citrus General Discussion / Kumquats
« on: June 27, 2017, 10:17:32 PM »
Once kumquats are turned into a jam or a sauce, they go exceptionally well with vanilla ice cream or as a filling in vanilla cake. The flavor comes from the essential oils in the rind, and it’s very healthy – I recommend you pop two in your mouth after breakfast each morning. It also goes really well with gin, although perhaps not straight after breakfast!”

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Re: Wanted good Pummelo seeds
« on: June 27, 2017, 09:48:56 PM »
Just a note a bout Pummelo seed------Citrus Maxima (pummelo) is never used as a rootstock commercially because it is a monoembryonic species, which means that every seedling is genetically unique.  So you don''t get uniformity, and you can't really predict form one seedling to the next what individual characteristics will be.

The trees should fruit rather quickly, as the scions that I sent you all from  mature fruiting wood.

Good to hear of your successful grafts.  Pretty soon you will have a forest over there.

SoCal2warm,  pummelos are monoembryonic and do not come true from seed.  Pummelos are not polyembryonic.  Some other common citrus varieties that are monoembryonic are Meyer Lemon, Nagami Kumquat, Marumi Kumquat, Temple Tangor, and Clementine Mandarin.  A pummelo seed will not give a fruit the same as the mother tree.
