Spotted: UF Best Peach (Home Depot)
« on: July 07, 2017, 08:37:21 AM »
I've been trying to get my hands on one of these for a while. It seems at least in South Florida they are hard to come by.

This was taken yesterday, I bought one so only one left
15 gallon, UF Best, $60, Sunrise (near Sawgrass mall) Home Depot

Did it come with its family of fruit flies?

I never tried growing them yet so I figured I'll give it a shot.
The literature say its fruits in April, I don't really have any fruit at them time so hopefully I can give it enough attention.

Anyways my current yard is an experiment of newer varieties of tree, along with crazy multi-grafts all crowded together.
I plan on evaluating and taking the stuff I like the best.

Trust me, there are fruit flies during peach season in SFla.

I purchased a UF Best from Just Fruits and Exotics in 11/15 and it produced 3 or 4 peaches
last Spring. I removed them due to the tree's small size so there were no fruit flies. This year
there was no fruit.

Florida Glow peaches are my favorite. They have melting flesh and non cling pits. When you take
a bite it melts in your mouth. If you haven't tried a white peach you don't know what you are missing.
I have never tried the Florida Best. Please give a report on the fruit taste next spring.

I lived in Gainesville for a number of years and never saw fruit flies being an issue.  Here in SFla, a definite issue.

I saw a beautiful UF Best at our HD this week and was a sucker and bought it. I felt bad for my fruit flies and thought I'd help them out.  :o I ain't got no problems baggin a few peaches each year if I can have some home grown peaches to eat...

My Tropic Beauty had HUNDREDS of the most delicious (but on the small side) peaches and not one fruit fly.

So what they say about requiring some chill hours isn't necessarily so?

It does require a bit more chill than other low chill.  I wonder if Gary's was not a true Tropic Beauty.   I pulled mine for lack of production and I have seen other produce poorly in SFla with our recent warmer winters

Well it wouldn't be the first time in history that a grower mislabeled a tree and passed it along to a retailer. I'm EXTREMELY meticulous maintaining a map of my plants so I report what it's labelled.

I have seen mislabeled trees at every nursery.

Lowes and Home Depot get the crown for selling it  but they can't take the blame for mislabelling it, some production growers do that for them.

My UF Best from HD has three name tags on it. Two standard pink name tags and one grey one from Phillip Rucks citrus nursery. I guess they didn't want to get it misidentified haha...

I have a few grande which is the lowest chill hour variety I have found at 100 hours I have them right next to my guavas and no fruit fly issues. Very tasty

I also have a much LARGER "Tropic Sweet" that has given me zero peaches since planting in 2011. The "Tropic Beauty" was planted in 2013 and receives no special care that my other trees get, fertilizer from Excalibur, well water, that's it. Nearby I have my other duds, a Green Sapote, Mamey, two lychee, sigh... I wish they'd all respond to my "green thumb" the way the tropic beauty has. Here's a pic of it starting to bloom and with some little fruits on it in early March (3-3-17) this year.

Of my three trees about half of the fruit had fly damage, last year 2016, one or two fruits (colder winter?). Tropic beauty had bigger fruit, UF One had the most, around 100 peaches on it. UF Sun had 3 fruits. Later in the season the more fruit fly damage.
All that being said it is nice having some fresh fruit on the eve of mango season.

Of the deciduous fruits, peaches are as close to mangos as you can get, but they are an exceptional fruit in their own right, as are plums, apricots, cherries.
